So I bought an "Open Item" Head Unit at Best buy..
Doesn't work!
It's a Pioneer DEH-6500.
Removed my Stock HU, installed the harnesses, plugged in the new one..
It turns on, I can access EVERY feature, antenna goes up, tuner, CD player, etc EVERYTHING works..
Catch is..
NO SOUND!
Volume control does nothing - I put the volume ALLLLL the way up and my speakers started cracking a lil but no music at any sound level..
Should I have expected this from an open item? I'm hoping it's an easy fix seeing as why would Best Buy even be selling it in the first place, what part could go wrong with this issue - Any help appreciated, thanks.

possible that during the process of installing, u might have shorted out the headunit and caused the internal amp to fry. thats what happened to my 2 last deck. i fried the internal amp. i got fed up and bought a deck without one to start with. lol.
now i learned that i should have disconnected the battery before installing anything.

Purchasing an Open Item from Best Buy is just like purchasing a new one. If it doesn't work, bring it back. You'll have to pay the regular price if you want another unit (unless the've got another Open Item). Your deck was probably a previously sold and returned item. Everything that comes back to the store as a return is bench tested for functionality (well, at least in our store it is) before it's given an "Open Item" tag, so it SHOULD have worked when it left the store.
bring that thing back. Since you bought it as an "open item", somebody probably tried installing it themself, f'd it up and brought it back and said nothing's wrong with it, they just didn't like it. Open items like that carry the same warranties as a brand new one, so just go back and get another one. Just give them a little grief and tell them you wasted all your time installing the thing and how they should test everything before they sell something as open. That'll give you some leverage to get a few bucks off a new one or even get a new one at the same price. Everyone else in Boca does it, and gets away with it.
Capacitors are usually what blow when people fry their stereos. There is a cap that goes from the internal amplifier to the speaker output. This cap blocks dc levels from entering but allows the ac signal to pass through. This is how all basic amplifiers are designed. You will still pay at least $100.00 for a .10 cent part though.

is a speaker shorting out? most new radios will cut out the internal amp if a speaker is blown and groundin out
edit* this is a feature of aftermarket radios.. stock ones will not do this.. check for continuity on all the speakers and also check ohms w/ a digital mulitmeter..
you will be pissed if you return the open box item and buy a new one at full price and it does the same thing
