Default Sitting motor = loss of compression?

A friend of mine got a Si Hatch a while back which ran but not too great. He let it set for about 2-3 months while waiting for $ to do something with it and now it wont start. It turns but wont start. Replaced the battery and plugs, has fuel, has spark, timing is fine. The only thing he hasnt checked is compression but even when he added some oil to each cylinder it wouldnt start. Smoke came out of the exhaust while cranking. So can the piston rings go bad while just sitting? Maybe the cyl walls had fuel on them etc? I've had my old a6 on an engine stand for about 6 months and am just curious if that might affect that motor too.

I see no reason why it wouldn't start.... Hmmz. Unless something electrical went wrong....
