Default Resale value of S2K - why so low?

Hey guys,

Just a question - I currently own a 99 GSR.. enjoying it - but in a year or so I want to buy a used S2K - I've noticed that the average S2K will go for 18-22K with anywhere from 20-50k miles - in Florida. Seen one as low as 17k with 29k miles on it..

RSX-S which is a cheaper car from the factory actually resales for more! Is it because it's an or just cause it came out in 2002? As opposed to 2000 for the S2K? Or maybe the fact that the new 2004 is coming out with some decent changes...

actually the s2k has one of the highest resale values in the country. I think it is tied for 6th or something like that. You can't compare a 2000 of any make to a 2002 of another make. Obviously a vehicle that is almost 4 years old will lose more value than a vehicle that is 1 year old.

The reason is there is no demand for a used s2000... you should be able to find one in the price range... alot of people ask $26-28k for their s2000's thinking they will sell it. No way. Why spend $28 when you can buy a new one for $30k.

They're still doing the market value increase on new ones. I think the S2k is losing it's value so quick because it has practically no features, really rough ride, and it's tough to drive. Most people at HT love that about it, but I think the majority of people would prefer a IS300 or something. Anyway, thats just one of my theories on why I lost $4k in 10 months on my s2k.

I guess the expectation of an S2k to hold its value was high. The thing is, in 2000 a new s2k didn't cost $33,060. Most people were lucky to get out the door at $35k + TT&L. The way I saw it was I was losing almost $4k per year, and my civic on I only lost about $1500 per year. Didn't really think about it in term of percentage.

What really hurt was the fact that people were paying a premium for the S back in 2000 and maybe even in 2001. The prices are just now settling where they need to be. A used S is still a good value and same with a new one considering you can get a new one for close to 29,500 now.

The reason it "sucks" is because every cars resale value sucks ***** right now. I remember when you could drive a civic off the show room floor, turn around and sell it in 6 months for $1000 less than you paid.

its no tthat the resale value sucks, its more like the orginal owner paid an inflated price at the dealership for it

This is partially true... consider this, some people financing this car end up paying $35 to $38k for it. Then they put 20k miles on it and two years go by... if they think they can actually sell it for $28-30k, they are surely mistaken... a 2001 s2ki with 15-30k miles on it in great condition is going for approximately $22-23k at most... anyone asking anything higher will probably not sell it...

I also spoke with dealers, any pre-2002 will receive a trade-in in the $17-18k at most range, and they turn around and ask $23-24... so considering those trade in's, of course retail is going to drop

The value of the s2k is falling because the entire used car industry is falling on its face.

There are so many "cool" Brand new cars out there

SRT-4
WRX/STI
EVO
CLK
All sorts of SUV's

Now on top of that we have brand new cars available with ZERO PERCENT INTEREST (or really low) And the banks and loan companies have been more lenient in the last 2 years then they have ever been. People with Fuuuuucked up credit (like me can still get a loan)

The little things like this are killing the resale value of all used cars in general. I buy and sell cars for a living (on the side of my 9-5) lucky for me I stick to the 3-6K car range (Crx's, EG's, integras, mr2's) and I still get to make good money cause there are lots of people with that much money in cash.

With the s2k you are in the 20's, There are not a whole lot of people with this kinda CASH in there pocket for a car. So they have to get loans and borrow here and there.

The whole world is in NEW CAR FRENZY...

But dont fear s2000 owners. The cars always drop the worst in the beginning. We see 2000's for 21K now, but I bet in 3 years they will still be going for "Around" that amount. I mean **** you can still sell 91 turbo mr2's for like 8K with 150K miles on them.

Just my experiences

They are not practical, and there are a billion for sale. Supply and Demand. Even all the kids that "graduate" now from a civic or integra or whatever, can easily find one.
