Default ZC won't start..

first off, its an 88 Rex SI with about 340,000km on the body and a 89ZC with about 150,000km on it.

so i was driving my car doin like 30km in 2nd gear and put the clutch in to slow down and car shut off. pushed the start button and it started right up. never really thaught anything of it. about 5 minutes later was driving along and it started to like sputter so i put the clutch in andit died and wouldn't start. tried it for a few minutes and it started right up, so i flew home. got in the yard and it started like 5 times in a row so i started to pull outa the drive-way, stopped for traffic and it died. and wouldn't go again. hasn't gone since. when i hit the start button, the car turns over but won't start. you can hear the fuel pump, and the relay under the dash click. starter sounds strong and i replaced the battery. but still same problem. if you try startin it a few times you can smell gas fumes so it seems to be getting fuel but not firing. think its the dizzy?

i've been reading around and i dunno if its the dizzy or the relay..even tho the relay is clicking like it should.

My buddy had the same problem and it was the dizzy, but he had wiring issues as well that had to be rerouted(due to whoever did the horrible swap)-Have you replaced your dizzy or any components in it? No CEL right?

It could be that the ignitor is beginning to die... So, like the post above said, try a new/different dizzy.

sounds like a typical problem....your car is old...when was the last time you did a tune up...or even popped your dist. cap off? its prob. corroded like all hell....and or ignitor is corroded=high resistance, or your rotor is bad...basically what im saying is your entire distr. is probably ruined from old age....just buy a new one....

but dont blame me if it doesnt work im not a parts changer but with the limited info thats about all I can say it sounds pretty simple

Actually I had the cap off the other day and there was hardly any corrosion at all inside, probably because its not the original dizzy that came with the motor when the swap was done about a year ago. I found a dizzy anyhow should get it on in a couple of weeks.

thanks guys for you posts.

It could also be the MAP sensor starting to fail. Mine was doing that, and it would run fine sporadically. About 3 days later I got CEL when the car died & it was the MAP code. I picked up a used MAP sensor for $20 & all was well again.
