Default 88 std hb, obd1 (p28) ecu, d16y8

ok. I've done as much reading as I can, as much searching, and I"m still confused.
from what I gather... to put the d16y8 into my 88 std hb, using the harness from the d16y8, I will need an obd2-1 conversion harness for the ecu.
now.
there is a plug in my engine bay (driver side, directly at the firewall) that doesn't match up to the plug on the wiring harness. we're guessing (haven't traced it yet) that it is going to the distributor. my questions:

do I HAVE to go to MPFI, and then go to OBD1? the impression I got from reading was that OBD1 was separate from MPFI.

if I want to go straight to OBD1 with the d16y8, do I need an OBD1 distributor and injectors, perhaps from a 92-95 civic?

right now, I have only a V-AFC, the p28 ecu, the engine, and the car.
I will, eventually, be getting a hondata stage 2b, once I get my turbo.

someone, please, tell me what to do, and be extremely detailed. I am a moron.

Ok, I am no expert...but I did just have a Y8 swap done. From what I gather from my research...it would be a waste of time to do a Y8 swap without converting to MPFI. Not that big of a deal...and sooo worth it... On my swap... they used a p28, and I thought they would need a OBD1 dizzy but they wound up being able to use the OBD2 dizzy that came with the motor.

I did use the OBD2-OBD1 conversion harness from blown90hatch on this forum to make things easier...however...the wiring under the hood is a different story...I left that up to the guys at AH Automotove.... the wiring proved to be a nightmare (as I hear it can be on the Y8 swap) But they did a fantastic job... and now I am pushing over 130 with my Y8, headers, and adj cam gear... It is a beautiful thing... as much trouble as it was...it is totally worth it...very quick...

whoa, you really need to do a lot more research before you get started on this project. let me break it down for you though:

1) convert your car to OBD0 MPFI using instructions found here: http://tech.hybridgarage.com/t...g.htm

2) buy or build a obd0 to obd1 ecu jumper harness so that you can plug your P28 in inside the car, run the several extra wires to the engine bay (4-wire o2 sensor, vtec solenoid, vtec pressure sensor, knock [if you want]). blown90hatch makes good conversion harnesses for a good price that come with instructions.

3) you will have to adapt your OBD0 engine harness onto the d16y8 motor. you can use either an obd1 or obd2 sohc vtec distributor, it doesn't matter. cut off your obd0 distributor plugs and splice in the obd1 or obd2 distributor plug (harness side) depending on which one you use. the wire colors will almost all match up.

4) install the motor in the car, attach the wires you ran from the ecu through the firewall to the appropriate sensors

start it up and check for codes. you'll have to ground one of the wires from your obd0 --> obd1 jumper harness to get your check engine light to flash out the codes.

i just did a b17 swap and obd1 conversion in my 1990 Std. (originally DPFI then converted to MPFI before this swap).

so I keep my distributor, but rewire the connectors. what colours will not match?

the plugs on the y8 are not the same as the plugs on the obd0 harness. does this mean that I have to cut each plug from the obd2 harness, and wire it to the obd0 harness?

the wire colors will all match up except if your engine harness is DPFI you will be missing two wires, blue/yellow and blue/green which you will need to run from your ECU directly to the obd1 distributor as explained in the MPFI conversion link I gave you above. do your homework, then get down to it and if you can't figure it out let us know.

Yea what he said.

its not easy as you think it will take some time get ready for headaches.

Did the swap 8 months ago gave me so much headaches but after getting all the problems fixed its worth it

its not the hardest swap to do but like the other people said it is no as eazy as some of the others basicly u need a y8 harness and a obd 0 harness and then if u are dpfi u will need a half of a obd o si harness to make the mpfi swap eazer and also a resistor box ( great if u boost for low imp injectors ) so on that note it takes alot of time if u dont know what u are doing i have done alot of mpfi and obd swaps and i still take my time too do it rite and make it look like the car came with it stock ps DO NOT USE BUTT CONNECTORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi I'm sorry I'm new around here.
I've been following all of the mini me stuff VERY closely as I'm gathering parts and getting ready to do one myself. I'm not going to post until I have all my ducks in a row, and I'm ready to ask the right questions to what I need.

but I'm wondering, is it bad or wrong to bring up old posts?

maybe it is in the rules section, I'll check.
