Default shifting

I am not an idiot, but I have never had this question answered for me... Is it bad to shift gears out of sequence.. say you take first to like 7,000rpm... is it bad to go directly to third, skipping 2nd?

I don't see why it would be. You have synchros for a reason. I've done it for the past 18 months in my del Sol and haven't had a problem if that makes ya feel better.

why would you skip a gear during acceleration?

hahahahahahhahahah that is a good one!!!

I like to accelerate hard in 1st some times and then cruise the speed limit, so 2nd is unnecessary.

yeah, sometimes i just like to punch it, but at the same time i dont want to go through all the gears since i'm already at the speed limit...

with my close ratio tranny...........I shift 1-2-5

1st = 3.250
2nd = 1.761
5th = .878

STock EX tranny that I have in car now has a bad 3rd gear.......
so I shift 1-2-4

1st = 3.250
2nd = 1.900
4th = .909

Just make sure to give the engine rpms time to drop (easy with a 12 lb flywheel) so synchros don;t work too hard.

Yeah but if the cops are real dicks, they can still get you for "display of speed", even if you never crest the speed limit.

to myself for nice word usage.

i skip gears when accelerating around an on ramp and merge into traffic, you go fast enough to match speed of traffic then pop it in fourth or fifth to just cruise and merge
