Am I getting ripped off?
Ok so I took my 92 CX to a shop to get a quote on a paint job. The guy quickly told me that its going to cost 4500-5000$ to just paint the exterior of the car(exterior only as in no door jams/engine bay just basic exterior). I asked him if it would be cheaper if I removed the panels/mouldings/lights/etc myself and he wouldn't even entertain the idea. All they could tell me to do is bring the car to MAACO... I don't know if they're trying to pysch me out or of they're just being stupid to a potential customer.
help, I really want to get my car painted but I don't want to pay a ridiculous price. Anyone in CT have any experience with paint jobs? Know any reputable shops?

That is way too expensive for a "basic" paint job. I mean, unless their paint is alert-the-president gorgeous, it shouldn't be that price especially with no door jams, which is pretty basic in itself
$4k-$5K is too much!! I got quote for pearl-white, three stage coating for $1200.
You need to shop around!! ask or see some of their recent paintwork on customer's car.
Maybe, because you are a returning customer or something..they might not want to deal with you.. for some reason they might have ripped you off the last time, and are trying to avoiding you!!..happen to one of my friend before!!
Shop around!! or ask people in you area who got paint job's done for recommend shops.

Only go to that shop (to get a quote) when you are in an accident and it is the other persons fault. Otherwise, stay the hell away, or you can swing by to throw **** at his store.
That's the thing about paint shops, no 2 shops will ever be the same. Just need to shop around, check out their work to see who does the best work that you can afford. 4-5k for exterior only is something that I would not even consider for a non-show only car.
This is a sample of their work, this car belongs to a friend of mine. Though he only got the body kit painted there, they seemed to match it up right and I really don't have any other experience with paint shops besides this.
Camera wasn't to good, but they color matched the kit pretty well - it cost him 2000+ to get painted. When he told me the price, I was pretty shocked.

Tomorrow I'll be driving around to get numerous quotes from other shops and hopefully I'll find a better deal. My hatch is currently red, its ok, but I rather get a nice white or silver - basically it looks good and its easy to keep clean. Thanks for the responses

i am paying this shop right now $1030 to fully paint my car and fix all dents (alot and everywhere) and fix where my car was wrecked in the front by a ford truck. changing color from frost white to taffeta white. not a big difference but i thought i was paying to much. ill show you guys the quality when i get it back this weekend. the work he does is nice! i am impressed and the car hasnt been sprayed yet
hehe. . .5000 for exterior paint, I'm pretty sure he forgot to mention that that price comes with a mail order bride to wash your car for you. . .
Here in NJ, $4000 would include engine bay and interior, exterior, body work, shaved moldings and wing/antenna holes, etc, etc. Using custom color dupont paint.

Ripped off for a exterior job only it should cost right about 2grand for a good job. 1-2grand for a cheap ok job. 4-5grand they better be pulling the motor out, painting the door jams, doing a custom color and high quality work
