Default What valve springs to use for all motor ls/vtec

I have a friend building an all motor ls/vtec I believe and he is wondering with Toda cams what valve springs should he run Crower valve springs to be a little cheaper or should he just use TODA valve springs? I will have more info on his build up as soon as possible

why don't you get him to buy a set of ef-1 springs and retainers? they're guaranteed against breakage if used together (springs/retainers). They are good up to 10k rpm. Not to mention, they're priced VERY aggressively for the performance numbers and guarantees they put up. PM me with any questions or concerns.

I'd say use same brand springs/cam combo, at least for Toda cams. TODA Racing dual valve springs have specific spring rates for TODA Spec B and Spec C camshafts. TODA valve springs allow maximum lift while preventing valve float which can occur under high rpm, high lift conditions. Their specific spring rates prevents damage to TODA camshafts which may occur as a result of using valve springs that are too stiff. Valve springs which are too stiff may also put additional stress on the timing belt.

Like others said, EF-1 springs are proven to work great.

I, on the other hand, am a big fan of matching the valvetrain with cams and gears.

For example, going with Skunk2 cams get their vavlesprings, retainers and gears..etc.

Who is building the head?
I would listen to the person that is doing all of the work for you or talk to a good head porter/builder and go with their recomendation

tell me why you should match the brand of springs with the brand of cams?

u do want to match your ti retainers with the same brand of springs.

I am going to do a valve spring 101 someday.

Alot of companies offer valve springs but very few get it right. Alot of springs are not properly designed and this causes problems.

I like the ef-1 the best and all our customers have been able to run extremely high rpms safely. Even on 11k mishifts.

I always used to think that valvesprings are made for use with same brand cams... call me a brand **** but thats just MY preference.

Why would I wanna run Skunk2 cams with Toda valvesprings and JUN cam sprockets... let's say something goes wrong, you call Skunk2 and first thing they ask you is .. what valvepsrings were you using with our cams.. altough there's no chance you're gonna get your money back anyway, they will blame you for faulty cams. Rocket is an expemtion - great customer service.

With some cam manufactures they know how much seat pressure and nose pressure to use for a certain profile. Some profiles are aggressive enough that if not enough spring pressure is use , the motor will see valve float at rpms below 5k or so.

The Honda stuff is a little easier. For stock retainers run over 70lbs at the seat to keep things happy with aggressive cams. You can run less seat pressure with lighter retainers and lighter valves.
