rotary crx?
ok, so i'm shootin the **** with my uncle and he starts tellin me about his buddy that stuck a 2nd gen rx-7 engine into his civic. didn't get many details out of him since it was at a family gathering but just the idea of running my crx with a rotary is tight. you guys think it would be possible to drop one in and get it running right? how tough would the swap be? would it be worth it? (it has to be)
thanks, peace

There was this guy from Puerto Rico that did that, it's a RWD crx, I think it was in the 9's. That crx used to be all over the magazines back in the day.
If you got a welder and some junkyard knowhow you can do anything, too!
speaking about rear drive, could find a small solid axle, the right width, use radius arms with poly bushings(copy the front axle design from a 1967-1979 Ford bronco), with some custom radius arms, and use a panhard bar to locate laterally. Or go 3, 4, or 5 link. a V8 would probably need the firewall cut out, a V6 might fit(3.8 GNX motor :-)
A rotory CRX.. front drive would be tough, because of the problem of the transmission. All rotory applications I can think of are RWD: RX's, cosmos, trucks..
So they have transmissions, not transaxles with an integrated differential.
You could machine up an adapter, possibly to mate the engine to a honda trans..
Just not a common thing to do.
I'm my other life, of Jeeps and Dune buggies, engine swapping is extremely common, they make adapters to bolt up just about any engine for a jeep to any trans, and for buggies, you can bolt anything to a VW trans..
I'm hoping to next year build a B16 dune buggy. 1000 lbs, 5.38 axle gears, rear slicks...can you say 11's on a stock motor :-) My friends 125 hp VW buggy trapped 96 mph in the 1/8th..

sounds like a long term project...but thats ok. the only questions i have are with the crx's potential as a rwd car...would the weight even balence right to make it effective in a turn? seems like a frame designed to be fwd would be wasting with a high powered rwd setup...

Rotary = tiny engine
Rotary = tiny engine
YOu'd definately want to go with a lightweight engine, if you went RWD. A rotory might not be a bad choice. Or go honda with an S2000 drivetrain :-)
Something will high HP but not high torque. Lots of torque will start twisting up the frame.
You would want to weigh the car without the drivetrain, and weigh the drivetrain, too, and figure out where to place it, to get close to 50/50. You'd probably be cutting out the firewall for motor clearance and the transmission tunnel for driveshaft and trans clearance.
I personally would never do it, but I don't do swaps for the coolness factor.

hehe like two minutes after i read this post i went to ebay to look at VW beetles for my sister and there was an RX7 hyrbrid beetle on there, look for the yellow pre 1998 beetle that says screaming 8000rpm hybrid
ONe big thing to remember is that the rotary engine and honda engines turn different directions. So with a rotary the reverse would go foreward and 1-5 would all go backwards.
HO yeah, forgot to mention that..
Honda motors(well, K series don't) turn backwards compared with just about everything else out there..
The the old air cooled VW transaxles, you can remove the diff, and flip it around, and it it will run in the opposite direction. Its very common to create 'mid-engine' sand rails with the engine in front of the wheels for better traction in the sand drags...

since you so close signal in torrance, go see their NSX motor in crx

The Signal Civic has a huge front end on it and the NSX motor sits sideways anyways, regardless, anything will fit if you have a welder

yeah, it probably wouldn't be that hard, really. Could probably use a Miata rear end, or hell, maybe the FC rear end would work. You might have to trim the drivshaft a little. Definitely have to trim the firewall and tunnel.
Could look at the latest honda tuning magazing, where they are building a AWD integra, using a rear CR-V differential.
Another optin, that they mostly got to work with the stock suspension.
I don't know how strong that diff was, though, and the mounting job they did looked like a total hack job.

mahdavi motorsports in atlanta werei live has a crx powered by a nsx motor. the CRnsX as they call it. if i remember gith the motor is mounte in the rear not the front. but check it out at http://www.mahdavimotorsports.com

that would be an EASY swap.
making the car FR is much more difficult.
