Default Timing Advance

How much do most of you advance the stock timing for more power on a daily driver? How much of a whp increase is there? Is this a safe thing to do assuming the cars mods only consist of bolt-ons, maybe a JDM Final Drive, and a V-AFC?

Up to 18degrees is about as far as Ive ever heard of anyone advancing for a stock/near stock daily driver. Any other commments would be appreciated on this, as I was considering doing it as well. Also, if anyone can provide some insight on whether advancing timing will affect warranty, it would be much appreciated. I had my car in the dealer for maintenance, and the chap at the service counter told me that it would ABSOLUTELY, (and he said it like he was using caps) void the warranty.

thx.

It seems that a lot of people discover this free mod. 18 deg is safe and the gain is noticable at the whole rpm range. I guess it's about 2-3 hp. 18 deg is within factory specs and btw my dealer advanced it for me for free cause I don't have a timing gun....

After you've done it with a gun, you can notch it so you know where 18 deg is and where stock timing is.

i think that ultimately the ecu controls the timing so marking the distributor will do you no good. If you set your timing to 18 and wait 6 months. the ecu would have moved the timing back to 16. I say 6 months because i don't know the actuall value. It could be somewhat sooner than 6 months.

Don't think so. The ECU will only retard the timing if the knock sensor picks up some knocking....

You have to stick a wire or paper clip in a little jumper under the passanger side dash board (little green plug with two wires going to it, usualy has a cap on it). Then adjust the timing and the ecu will keep the new timing. That is what the helm manual says.

You have to jump the service connector or else the ECU will compensate for your changes to the distributor. There's a good set of instructions at this site:

I think your wrong on this one. The ECU has specific timing maps that do not change unless knocking is present. Otherwise these timing maps do not change, the definitely do NOT evolve over time. If knocking is present the ECU simply goes into a limp mode, it does not alter the maps. By setting the timing on the distributor you are placing a timing bias on the entire timing map. This is why it works, and this is why you have to set timing in the first place.

I have been running 18degrees all summer and can say that it is working fine. I cannot possibly see how any dealership can void a warrantee when nothing you have done is out of HONDA's own specs!!

I noticed the improvements immediately with this. Definitely something to seriously consider!

Is this something that I can do granted that I have a timing gun? I'm dyno-ing my car tomorrow and the place wants $10-$15 for advancing the timing. Sounds too rich for me. Thanks.

So is the common number for advancing timing 18 degrees?

Anytime that it is not okay to have advanced timing, asside from FI applications?

I use 98 octane gas with 11.1 compression and 18 deg timing. No problems. I want to try 20 deg someday.....

Will the dealer advance the timing for me? Just wondering cuz someone said it wouldn't void warranty, because it s still within R specs. I never done this before nor have the equipment to get it done. Thanks

My dealer advanced mine for no charge.....took the mechanic 5 minutes, when I brought it in for an oil change.
