Polishing Old Tailights to look new.. help!!!
I talked to a guy at the db drag world finals last year that drove a silver crx. It was in the polk audio booth. You might have seen it on the cover of honda-tuning a few months ago.
I looked the car over and noticed that every single part of the car looked brand spankin new.
I asked him how he got the tailights brand new and he told me that he polished them. He said he used sandpaper and a plastic polishing compound to work them back to a brand new shine.
The steps were similar to what you do to polish metal (valve covers, headers, intakes, etc.)
The only problem is, I don't know the exact steps or types of sandpaper to use. Also, I can't seem to find the plastic polish locally..
Anyone have a writeup on this type of job, and a place to buy the polish online?
Any help would be awesome... thanks

Hmm, there is plastic polish sitting in my driveway. Its my dads though... dont know where he got it.
Just get a bunch of grits sand paper... dont start very coarse though. Gradually go up in grit and it will get smoother and smoother. After you use the highest grit you can find, its polishing time.
I think I might try this myself.... got some stock tails sitting on my porch.

First use Meguiar's 'Mirror Glaze Clear Plastic Cleaner ' (M-1708) and then use the 'Mirror Glaze Clear Plastic Polish' (M-1008). Its the two on the left of the pic...you might need a buffer.
1000,1500,2000 grit should be high enough grit wet sand paper to use, 2000 is pretty safe on paint with a polish afterwards, so it should be fine on the plastic... I'll post in a few days when I try 1000grit and regular paint polish.

I was just looking at my tails are your gonna need to start with a coarser paper on some areas.... they have all this writing stamped on them I never noticed before you will want to sand off.
get a sheet of 1000 and a sheet of 1500 or so, wet sand the **** out of them, keep the paper wet, and dont press hard, then use plastic polish and that shiz will look new......like was mentioned before.
this works well on headlights and unpainted mirrors too

Dont even bother with sanding them.....I just use the Meguiar 3-step wax system on every part of my car including the glass....except the moldings.....everything looks brand new. Ups the bling-bling factor to 10.............
