Dangers of Water Getting into CAI?
I've read on a couple different sites of people that get water in their CAI and it can cause major problems. What can happen if water gets in your CAI, and how can you prevent it? Specifically with an AEM V2 CAI.
If water gets into your engine, you're going to get Hydro-lock.
If you want to prevent it, then buy a bypass valve for your CAI. AEM makes them for around $45, and if snow or water is a problem aroud where you with, it's worth the money, instead of taking a chance without it

Im looking into the V2 and Bypass and was wondering how the overall rating of that CAI is?

Oh, I'd worry about it alright. Bypass valve is not a 100% guarantee, more like 50%. Be very careful in the risks you take with the CAI, I've seen cars totalled cause of hydrolocking and your insurance isn't going to be happy to help you out.
yeah that happened to me too. well, actually the guy who sold the car to me. he put CAI and it soaked up the water. so he replaced the whole motor with 2001 motor. good for me, bad for him. after that, i replaced CAI with short ram. good thing u noticed.

Not true, mine was on when I sucked up water. all it really does is keep your filter cleaner. it does block splashes of water but if it is submerged, water gets in.

I'm not sure about where you're located, but in Seattle we have a rainy "season" (no, it's not all year), and during that I'm gonna just stick the filter on to the manifold and eliminate the pipe all together. I'd rather lose some performance than mess up my motor. This is just a suggestion if it's a problem for you. My friend bent a connecting rod when he sucked up water through his CAI. If you don't want to change anything, then you better stay on your toes when it's raining. If you can't steer away from the puddle, put the clutch in or something so you're not sucking in as much air.
i sucked water in my old engine.... huge rainstorm caused street flooding. no way to avoid the water so i went through it. car spit out white smoke from the exhaust and stalled. restarted and was fine, drove home, did compression test came up low on cyl # 3.
i saw sport compact car i think it was use a bypass valve on an nsx with a cold air then sumberge the filter in water. the valve worked!
from what ive read the bypass valve restricts the intake enough to take away the benifits of a cold air system though. i say just get this one

the above statement is true....using the bypass valve pretty much cancels the gained horsepower from using the cold air system. Im am wondering though if you have a 99 gsr on boost why are you worried about a cold air?
If you're dumb enough to drive through a puddle that is deeper than the bottom of your door sill, then you deserve to get water in your engine.

The boosted GSR was sold. It had just a standard short ram, plus It never really rained too much in SD. Now I'm going to school in Washington, and it rains quite often. Im looking at getting another LS, and doing bolt-ons and a bunch of suspension work, then autocross it.

well i hope it happens to you then
when it happened to me it was one of the worst rain storms i had ever seen, within minutes the entire road i was on was flooded. i got off the road as soon as i could but it was too late.
bad **** happens to everyone, no need to be a dick about it.

Yeah man, before it happened to me I used to say the same thing to people. But **** happens fast and when you're not expecting it sometimes and have no alternatives.
