Default 88 CRX Question

My friend picked up a 88 CRX for like $400, and it has a Carb motor in it. He went to change the clutch, and after he did that he noticed a power lose. At times he can have his fut all the way down on the gas pedal and the car will barely move at get all herky jerky, but other times it hauls ***. We have been trying to figure out what the problem could be for all the jerky-ness.

We changed the oil yesterday, put in new spark plugs, changed the fuel filter, and he's going to change the PCV valve too. It does have some home made spark plug wires that he made, but they look professional, and they test right when tested for resitance and all. Any help would be greatly apprecited.

Check for wiring and put the old spark plug wires back in to make sure. Any CEL when this happens? Check Vaccum lines too.

no CEL at all . . . I guess he said something about the car not having a ECU, it has a CU . . .computer unit since it is not fuel injected. By changing all the stuff we did yesterday that helped a lot, but it did not solve the problem 100%. I told him to go back to OEM Spec Spark Plug Wires . . . . I think the wires he made were a little more on the high performance side.

If it's a 88 CRX, it is fuel injected (dual point) and it has a ECU. Are you sure it's not a 87 or older? Those are the only carbed ones.

there are a few distinct body differences in the 87 and older and the 88-91 CRX's. the biggest for me is probably the rear of the car.

88 CRX

87 CRX (got one without the guy)

the other obvious difference is as was already pointed out 88-91 didn't have a carb model just the DPFI fuel injected one and the box (looks kinda like a carb) on the intake manifold says DPFI on top. If none of what's said lines up then it's not an 88-91 CRX and your friend got jacked.

And the best to my knowledge, there wasn't ever a carbed CRX that would haul ***. Even sometimes... Those things are frickin slow, trust me, I used to own one with the beast of a 1.5.... Haha, I had the 'big engine'.

What engine does it have? Yeah man, do some research on what year the car is.

ok I had my crap all mixed up . . . something told me it was 89-91 CRX, but I just jumbled stuff . . . . it is a 87 CRX, and yes it is a Carb motor. I believe it is a 1.5, but I am not positive on that. For being a Carb car, and being so damn old I have got to hand it to my friend for making that car move, but that's besides the point . . . it's finding out why he is losing power, and why the car is all herky jerky like the way it is.

The jerky-ness is just like say a fuel injected car slowing down sometimes gets a little jerky if you are in to high of a gear or what not, but like I mentioned he can sometimes be flooring it and barely even go any place, but other times it drives smooth.

My Isuzu pickup does that. I've sprayed down the carb countless times, ran carb cleaner, changed the PCV valve. The only thing that seemed to help was 93 octane.... My friends Isuzu down the road has the exact same problem...

Say you are going 50 or so in 5th gear, let off to about 1/8th throttle, does it buck kinda? I have no clue what causes it though... I get crappy gas mileage too.... I'd check vacuum lines; I need to do that with my truck because some of them are just blocked off.... I just need to check it out.

EDIT: Also, I have the same power at all times...

exactly! It bucks like that if you let off the gas, or give it to much gas to fast, it's like you gota catch it at the right time, otherwise it's like he hits the gas then the break then the gas then the brake. The crazy thing is . . . everything worked fine before he changed his slipping clutch, and then after he changed his clutch it started to buck like a bitch. We have sprayed it down countless times with Carb Cleaner but nothing has solved the problem yet . . . .

</TD></TR></TABLE>You are semi-correct.
On the 2G CRX's NO carbs on USDM models, 1988-91.
But the REST of the world did have 2G CRX's with carbs. JDM + EDM,etc.
On the USDM 1G CRX's MOST HAD carbs, except the Si's. And, maybe Hf's.

I've had NO experiences personally, with ANY civics, other than CRX's. So I can't really say with any certainty. But one can assume so.
HTH.

If you want to actually do it take off the carb... boil her out clean her all up put her back in or just buy a new one... see if thta helps... depends on your budget. but my zuzu does the same thing sometimes and its the carb... carb cleaner wont do anything so stop tryin =/
