How to tune Hondata's timing?
After talking to some of the hondata tuners I am still a little unclear how you guys tune timing. Some people say well just take out .5 degree per pound of boost or 1 degree per pound, but the thing is how do you know what that is? The maps were never created by the factory ecu so how do you know what numbers to adjust?
Also what is the most effective way to tune timing? Dynojet? Mustang Dyno? Street tune? I ask these questions because I run high EGT's and I think my timing is too retarded. I know its hard to tune EGT's but when you are close to 900C it gets a little scary and I wonder how can I run safer timing with lower EGT's. Any help would be most appreciated guys. Hope Matt or Doug will jump in on this one too.

Nate, to add to our AIM conversation we just had. High EGT's can come from too little timing as well. An EGT guage is just an additional "tool" for tuning.

Thanks Dan your explanation really helped me out. I just wanted to get some other reactions too.

Nate, your timing values are on point with my engine. The timing values are close to where they should be for optimal power, and engine longevity. You tune the timing maps by setting the timing low on the street, and adjusting the fuel. Once you get to the tune, you start putting the timing back into the maps till you can see no additional increase in horsepower. At the point where you are gaining little to no horsepower by increasing the timing, you back off the timing to the last timing change that added power. I have tuned engines before where the goal was to run the most on pump gas, and pulled back the total timing advance to 15 degrees and ran the engine 11.5:1 under boost. The egt's were still below 800 Celsius even on 5th gear pulls.
Ya Jeff I know you tuned the car well. I just am still baffled on whether or not I should be worried if my EGT's jump really high sometimes? I am cruising around 710C where before I had the built block and everything I was running in the 600's.
