Hi everyone, I just want to let you know what happened to me. Here is the complete story.

I live in Panama city, Panama and own 2 Road Racing Civics with B18C engines. I wanted to build the one I usually run to make mad power and torque so I called DPR Racing. I got Dan on the phone and we discussed what could be done. Then I emailed him what I had done and he gave me a price quote which was around $5,200 that included his cams that sell for $1,200 when I really wanted the JUN 3 or Toda Cs but he said that his cams would blow those cams away. . Well, I sent him a deposit and he started working on my parts. He was going to do a stage 6 port job, install dual springs, retainers, his cams, etc.

Well, time started passing and the price started going up. By the end, I had invested around $6,500. When he was done, Dan (which would talk to you like an old friend which seemed to be a nice person) started telling me how it would be best if I flew him to Panama ($600 plane ticked) and payed him $500 a day to supervize the installation of the parts, do a little work on my pistons and to a valve to piston clearance check. I told him that it would be too much money for all that but he convinced me telling me that he just wanted the best for me and he would take car of me.

Well, he flew down here and brougth the head and cams with him. That was on a friday. My mechanic took apart my engine(which was runnig great) and called us to begin the installation. Dan did a little cleaning on the pistons and then we began installing the head to check for clearance. We did a mock up and he did what he had to do. We left it at that I took him to the hotel. Saturday comes and we finished the installation and proceeded to crank it up. While doing it, the timming belt came off so they shot it down right away. I was not there when that happened but Dan told me about the incident. I asked Dan if we should take it apart again to make sure everything was OK and he told me that it was not necessary, that he checked it out already with a little optic tool that has a light at the end of it. He told me that everything was fine, no problems at all. We installed the belt again and proceeded to crank it up. Everything looked and sound fine and strong (well, at least while it was inside the garage). . Sunday came and we went to test the car. We went out but it was raining so the testing was limited. One thing we did noticed was the the Vtec was not engaging. We started looking why it was not working and it turned out to be a sensor but testing was over, I never felt the car working properly but he said that the car is ready to whoop some ***.

I took Dan to the airport and that was that. Race weekend came and we took the car out for practice (have not been driven yet since Dan left). I did a warm up lap, very easy on the car. Dan said that he built the head to handle 10,000 RPMs if needed but 8600 would be enough because the cams were made for torque up to 8400 RPMs. Then on the second lap of practice I took it to 7000 RPMs and the engine broke down. We went ahead and opened it up and found out that one of the valves hit the piston(forged) and broke and damaged the block and the head. They were completely ruined. He made me fly him down here, pay his fees to make sure this would not happen and it did.

I was very mad so I emailed Dan and told him what hapened and the response I got was "too bad, keep us posted". That just made me furious because I had a very strong engine and as soon as Dan works on it it breaks. SO here is were I stand and what I have paid for so far:

Over $6500 in parts and labor
$600 plane ticket
$1500 Dan fees ($500 a day X 3 days)
$400 for hotel, phone calls he did and other expenses.
Total $9000 plus a very badly broken engine.

I emailed him again and I just went all out about how mad I was and how it was his fault because he built the parts, he tuned the computer, he checked for valve clearance and supervized the entire installation.

He wanted me to ship the ruined pistons, valve, spark plugs, etc. so I did. Now I have been emailing him for weeks with no answer.

I got ripped off big time. So a word of advice, stay away from that fu..er and do not let this happen to you. DPRRACING sucks.

That's weird. Dan has an impeccable reputation. I suggest you keep trying to work out a solution with him. If it truly is his fault then I highly doubt he wouldn't reiumburse you in some way. He has a very large business to run, and im sure he doesn't need/want a bad rep.

I agree. He built me an awesome motor and has always had great customer service. Sorry to here about your motor.

 

Thats what I thought. He seem like a nice person over the phone but ever since this happened, he would not email or answer me. He had his boy IAN answer me and that was a few weeks ago. Now I hear nothing from them.

 

I cant believe that happen to you. I got work from dprracing about a three months ago and they did a great job on my head. I went through there new location which is closer to the east coast. sorry about your lose man

you called him cuz he's the best. he still is. **** happens, its racing. I had a crower intake cam shatter and ruin a 3500 bottom end and 1500 DPR'd gsr head. It sucked, the best thing to do is to send him the parts and he will prolly take care of you. If you talk **** then he will ignore you. I know its alot of money but once again its racing. work together not against. good luck with it and I'm sur it'll work out.

 

I think the worst thing you could have done you just did. I am not sure about publicly getting all over DPR. When building a big time hp monster things aren't always going to be perfect and you can expect things to happen. Yes, your situation is unfortunate and I am sure not your fault but just keep trying because I don't see DPR ignoring such a big paying customer. Just keep trying.

 

Not to take away from your post, but if you pay me $500 a day and get me a couple of prostitutes.....I could help take care of your situation with Dan.

Prostitues, WTF?
This is the most crazy fucked up situation ever. The fact that you threw he wanted some prostitues to help him relax just in there like it could be a part of any story anywhere.
I've heard of DPR racing, but before today never any bad or good things. I've heard one good thing, and one bad thing.

1_bad_EF I know this post does not help but this did not happen a few days ago, this happened about 3 months ago and they have been ignoring me. I have emailed them a lot with no luck.

PATDEMP and know that in racing engines blow up but I had a great running engine, then Dan built the head, cam, installation, and tunning and it did not last 2 laps of practice at 7000 RPMs. If you tell me that this happens and is part of the game then I am out of the game. This entire thing cost me $9,000 plus I have to buy a new block, pistons, head, etc.
I don´t see any racer have some build an engine that completely messes up a be cool because is part of the game

sorry to hear about your situation. that is a lot of money to lose so quickly and then have to start over again.

if nothing positive arrises out of your situation, seek legal advice.

Well maybe you should call Dan and tell him you heard that one of the prostitutes had some kind of STD or HIV. Maybe he'll you'll feel a little better by scaring the sh.t out of him.

 

I'm sure we can some how use the prostitues for leverage...
aswell, I think legal advice is a foggin good idea too.

Man i can't beleive this. You have every single right to be upset. As far as him just ignoring your messages, that shows just how much hes really taking of you and the customer service he shows. I have seen alot of shops take responsibility for there **** ups, every shop must consider that they may messup, thats a risk you have to take. But the way he is just ignores your messages and the way he repyed back says "too bad, keep up posted" is just low.

I can understand if he built your motor and you mis-shifted and blew it yourself, that would be your fault. But the reason he came down was to make sure the engine would last, and it didn't.

Maybe he did, who knows... The way Dan probably see's it is:
It was running fine when he left, then you take a race motor out to a race track to race, then the motor blows.

Either way, the whole situation sucks, and he shouldn't just be ignoring you.

 

Im sorrie about what had happened to you but ive been in this buisiness for awhile like 9 years i remember Dan when he was just getting popular with the the Hondas. However im not surprised about what happened to you Dan is a man not of his word hes ripped alot of people off for instance if u guys out there reading this remember about the "daily driven red integra with a stock ls motor just with the top stage dpr port" wasnt exactly daily driven it was a full race car and the bottom end wacnt stock at all the car actually belonged to my friend it was one of the first all motor hondas to run a 12 sec Dan form dpr had claimed that all it hadwas a head port with there cams that was totally un-true anyways my friend was one of his customers and Dan told him to sign a contract stating that Dan would do all the work needed to make him one of the fastest all motor contenders well my friend signed the contract. The contract stated that tthe car would have to be parked at his shop in torrance for a year my friend would not have to pay for anything all expenses would be picked up by the company "DPR" the owner would be able to drive the car at the events like if it was his but it would have to be left at dpr for a year dor "developement" anyways what Dan did was he cut the hell out of this integra put a fuel cell in it built the bottom end th car was on race gas anyways to make this long story short is that dans goal was to advertise this integra ls non vtec to be daily driven when it really wasnt dan got alot of buisiness from this cuz everyone from different areas of this world were buying this so called special port thinking that there integra ls would run 12s well it didnt take long for these people to find out that there car was nothing but 14 sec cars that they had spent over 1800 dollars for alot of people were upset my friend ended up taking the car backbreaking the contract with dpr dan ended up suing my friend and my fiend won the case cuz he never really understood the contract. Anyways we took the car home and tore it apart it had very high compression pistons a ported head bid ls cams the car was ruined it was cut to hell with all the panels put back on it was made to look like a street car. SO TO ANSWER YOUR GUYS QUESTIONS ABOUT DAN YES HE IS A LIAR A DAMN GOOD ONE TOO.
