Default hawk brake pad problem.

Back in June I installed some Hawk brake pads for the front of my Integra. Last few days I've been hearing some minor squeling from the passenger side brake. I figuered it was a normal sound due to a more aggressive pad. When I inspected I noticed that the backing plate {shim} was now crooked and grinding a nice line all around the hub of my rotor. Has anyone else experinced this? Is it safe to run the pads without this backing plate? Thanks in advance for all responses.
