Default to all you guru's... a little question i have about a problem i have

my car is not running well. it vibrates like hell, idles weird, and makes a clicking noise at high rpms. i dont have an exhaust, so i can hear that noise.

motor is sohc zc with about 100k kms on it.

it seems like my motor is not starting as healthy as i want it to.

when motor is cold: it takes like 6-7 sometimes 8 cranks before firing up.

when motor is warm: it starts verrrry sloppily... it sounds like it has some kind of problem. sounds like it is "churning" like sludge, and then it fires up.

today: motor wouldn't even turn. did the "tap start motor" thing and fired up.

yes i know i need to replace my start motor, but my question is: does this have anything to do with the fuel pump?

also, what can i do to fix the other problems?

tia

This could be a number of things.. but it shouldnt be a fuel problem. Sound like something to do with ignition and electronics..
First make sure your alternator is in good running order, check that out.. did u notice any signs of it going bad? like any charging prolems?

Next, check the ignition system.. its one of the weaker links on these old hondas. Cap, rotor, timing, wires, plugs, etc.. hope that helps.

well, my dizzy was replaced not too long ago (like 5 months ago), and i got new plugs at around the same time. i also grounded the motor better since it was corroding away... that helped a little. but i will try to look into the alternator, wires, and timing i guess.

thanks for the input.

O2 sensor and or fuel filter. and yes the clicking noise is either electrical or loose parts. most likely the first. When in doubt do a tune up.

I would have to say the vibrating may be due to loose engine mounts, suspension, chassis???
Replaced the ignition cables lately? O2 sensor???...um ummSHOTGUN!

Same thing was happening to me, and on my way to school today the my D16A6 Civic crapped out on me. My ignition coil melted because it was arcing to the dizzy cap.

Oh yeah! when your engine is idling, pull the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator(Vacuum hose not fuel return line!!) If gas comes out replace the damn thing. Plug the disconnected hose also while performing this test.

i think the sensors are all fine, since i checked the ecu... its not throwing any codes.
i will try that vacuum line ****... actually, i think im just gonna do a tune up. its better for the car too anyways.

loose parts... since this is a swapped motor, i guess the mounts are worn down... thus the vibrations. im getting coilovers hopefully tomoro with new wheels and tires..... there is a disgusting vibrating noise at certain rpms or certain brake pressures on the front passenger side... im guessing it is the passenger side strut tower... maybe a loose nut. hopefully i'll find this out tomoro and replace/repair my baby altogether

thanks for the input guys. i knew i can always rely on fellow h-t folks

Dont forget. just because the O2 is not throwing a code doesnt mean it doesnt need to be replaced. 1 wire O2s are $23 at autozone. good luck

Several things it could be. Fuel, ignition, starter, or timing. I would check your timing first. IF your timing belt breaks, you could be completely screwed out of a good motor. If the car is having problems starting like that, when you turn your key, i think it is 1 click, you will hear your fuel pump kick in, if you do not, then it is time to change it. IT could also be the little switch in your ignition where your key goes. Try fuel pump. The starter, you would know if it was goin out cause the car would no hardly do anything when you turned the key. It may make a noise but it would not make the sound like it was goin to start up. Take some time and investigate this. and good luck to you.

True, i noticed the peformance of mine about a month before it tripped the engine light. Air/fuel gauge was not changing quick enough. Then no reading. A couple days later finally the engine light came on! I love gauges.

Not so fast . It could also be a bunch of other things, main relay, loose connecter. But the true test would be to measure actual fuel pressure before the injectors and after. (not neccasarily both if no pressure exists.) If low pressure or too much, well I could go on and on about this. Basics first will always save you skinned knuckles and curse words.
