handling upgrades
I'd go with Eibach Sportline, or Pro-Kit springs (depending on desired ride height) with Koni Yellows, and ITR rear sway bar w/BSQ mounting kit. The spring-shock and swaybar combo is where to start and then if really want something more you could spring for a rear tower brace, or front and rear lower tie braces, the springs and swaybar however will yield more dramatic results.

get the 22mm ITR rear anti-sway bar with either BSQ's or the beaks kit. your car will feel like a whole new car with this set up. you can get the ITR bar for around 80 bucks at http://www.ahmotors.com and the mounting kit can be bought from a guy on the boards name BSQ just ask for him.
good luck

I'd say improve the driver before the car
. The performance oriented setup would the the Eibach ProKit and a shock of your choice. I'd go with the Koni Yellows if you have the extra money because the ability to adjust the stifness alone makes them worth their weight in gold. Bear in mind that after the springs/shocks/swaybar, your handling will still pale in comparison to the R's due to its LSD and reinforced subframe.
PS
My pick would the the Eibach ProKit and Koni Yellows combined with either the Comptech Swaybar (if you have the money) or the TypeR 22mm swaybar with BSQ mounting kit.
