irratic idle problem FINALLY fixed!!!
just to let you all in on some history with my friggin tach problem.
my civic dx didnt come with a tach. got a crx cluster and installed it.. it worked for a while then the tach needle went hay wire. up and down .. up and down.. and i was in neutral. when i drove, the needle of my tach would reach just under 3000 rpm then would bounce to 4 then to 2 then to 5 then back to 1 and so on.. even when i came to stop sometimes it would drop to zero... it was a pain in the neck. also my car would idle way to high some times causing me to pull the gas peddle up with my foot.
i tried nearly everything that everyone posted and searched for answers..
i changed the map sensor.. that wasnt it
i checked all the vacuum line.. that wasnt it
i check the voltage on the throttle body position sensor thing... that wasnt it
i even checked my o2 sensor.. that was fine.
well i was finally giving up until just recently my car had troubles starting and when i drove it, no matter what gear i was in, when i reached 1500 rpm my car would jerk like no tommorow. felt like my car was going to stall while i was driing.
well my dad and i checked it out and found that i needed a new distributer cap.
i thought that this would only fix my driving problem, BUT it also FIXED my IRRATIC IDLE. IT NO LONGER FLUXUATES and i can reach 6000 rpm without the needle bouncing around. and my car no long idles high.
of all the info i found about irratic idles, NONE of them said anything about the distributer cap.
well i know that this is just my experience with that irritating irratic idle, but hopefully someone here can use this info and maybe help them fix their idle problem

A good rule is to do a full tune up whenever your experiencing any type of weird problems that are electricaly related. The dist is usually the first place to look. glad your car is running better now
