Default ****165whp & 135tq .... good for a STOCK b20vtec???

****Since there was not that many responce I just wanted to give the EG form a shot at what they think about this

Well I’m helping a cousin of mine build up his B20vtec motor. He currently has a B16a1 running PR3 ecu in his 89 civic si. He is getting tired of having no low-end power so what I have come up with for him is to go with a VERY basic B20vtec. This is what we plan to do:
STOCK b20 block
-apr rod bolt
-apr head bolts
-Full-Race dowel pins (thanks FFgeoff)
-SS line kit (thanks Stan aka Flamenco-T)
STOCK b16a1 head (cams, valve train, no milling)
-PR3 ecu with VAFC hack.
-keeping stock redline of 7500-7800rpms since the cams don’t make power over that.

Like I said earlier…..very basic. The only thing he wants from this is to get more lower end torque for the pleasure of daily driving. What I told him is that B20vtec is not to be taken lightly. However looking at what his goals are I do not see a problem with this setup. We are not trying to cut corners or by any means be cheap and ghetto. We will upgrade any parts of the setup if it is necessary to reach our goal.

All said and done what we would he happy with is a stock B20vtec with 135torque and 155 to 160whp with slight fuel management with a FPR and the VAFC. Does that figure seem about right? becuase if i'm correct ...hp is only a figure of tq, so when you add more displacement (TQ) you add more topend HP correct?

He is also planning on boosting with a greddy 18G kit off a 99si. He did boost on his stock B16 but did not like the lag of not reaching boost until 4500-4800rpms on that little 1.6 motor. So here are my questions:

1) should we stick with the AFC hack or save more money and get hondata stage2 for the PR3?

2) can we run dsm 440cc injectors (since he has a EF) with out any fuel adjustments on the afc ?

3) should we set the FPR at about 48psi or higher ...50psi?

4) will it be safe to start the motor with ZERO fuel adjustments and just let it idle on stock B16a1 fuel psi?

5) stock US spec B20z and stock B16a1 head will give a compression of 9.8 with a OEM B20 3layer head gasket correct???????

any advice would be great. Even if is off topic or what not. tips, cautions, warnings are appricated.

With 440's you need to trim fuel with the vafc. It will be completely safe with the stock fuel adjustments, but with the injectors you need some way to trim the fuel.

Aftermarket pistons? Not worried about valve clearance?

no aftermarket pistons if you read my post agian I'm just keeping this a simple STOCK B20vtec.

I spoke to many members who are great tunners and builders & they have told me i will not have any problem valve to piston clearance even with (ctr/ITR cams.... unless i don't go more than 3-/3+

anymore thoughts?
I would be very happy with that same outcome as the dyno above.

440's will be to big and an V/S AFC can only add not remove fuel. go with 310's

I would say run Hondata. Tuned correctly, 20-30 whp shouldnt be a problem.

160 on a stock setup is pretty decent IMO...

Give it more fuel, and let it breath (I/H/E) and go +2 on the cams (makee sure you arent going to be slapping) also try a 0.1 head gasket to bump it up just a tad (might not work with the +2 on the cams but worth a shot)

B20 is fun

440's will be fine....just lower your fuel pressure. i ran on 450's for about a month after i blew my turbo and it ran just fine...just have to lower the fuel pressure a bit and tune down the upper rpm fuel curve. also you did state that your buddy also has a turbo setup as well so 440's will be perfect. just run the hack until you can afford a hondata.

yeah that is what i was told also about the AFC. Cheap but it works and been proven manytimes that it can control the motor.

Well in NA form we HOPE to get my buddies EF (2291lbs) car down the track at about 14.2 to 14.5. We will have the torque for sure but the topend is going to settle how fast we finish as in trap speeds.

This will be done with good coilovers, shocks, jimfab traction bar, 13' lenso on 22x7.5 slicks, a exedy puck clutch (mild 300whp appications not race 6puck) and a decent drive that can hit 2.1 or better 0-60ft times.

no more money for LSD...

99 si head
b20b block
ls tranny
slightly dented dc 4-2-1
2.25" testpipe
2.25" tanabe dtm exhaust
intake

mebe the less dented header made the difference
