oil change
i have a 98 integra ls. im pretty new to this and just learning the basic. i need an oil change and i wanted to do it myself. can somebody out there please tell me step by step how to do it. thanks a lot
it's basically the same (for the most part on most cars)..
i can't believe you're asking this but.. what the hell. Here's a basic rundown:
You need these tools:
-1 Specified Integra Oil Filter
-I think you need somewhere around 3 quarts of oil (check your owner's manual, and buy the amount of oil you need)
-A large oil catch pan.. or some metal pan you don't care about.
-A socket or a wrench
-2 jackstands, a couple of wooden blocks, your factory jack
-An Oil Filter Wrench (in case your filter is stuck on.)
-a funnel (for pouring oil into the engine)
-some rags
1. Pop the hood and remove Oil cap from block, and set it somewhere safe.
2. Lift the car, and secure the front end on 2 jack stands. Check to see if it's secure, by pushing on the front and rear bumper of the car (up and down). If it's secure, the car will stay still. If it is not secure, it will probably fall of the jackstands or something. Just rack your car correctly (I don't know the exact rack points for an integra. check with someone here).
3. Put the oil catch pan under the oil filter/oil drain plug. I usually pull the oil filter off 1st, but that's just me. Well, anyways.
-for the oil filter, you will need to find it, it looks like a little round canister. It's under your car. Just unscrew it off (if it's too hard to screw off with your hand, use an oil filter wrench), and let the oil drain into the oil catch pan.
-for the oil drain plug, use the socket wrench/wrench (i'm bad with tool names) to unscrew the plug off. After it is unscrewed, the engine oil will fall into the oil catch pan
4. The oil will take a few minutes to completely drain/drip out. When it is empty and not dripping, wipe down the bottom of the block (wipe areas on the engine where you saw the oil splash)
5. Screw the new oil filter on. And hand-tighten it. After hand tightening it, use the oil filter wrench to tighten it a little further (not too much. you don't have to do more than hand-tighten it, but I usually tighten it a little more)
6. Clean the oil drain plug with a rag, and screw it back on. Don't forget to tighten it.
7. Clean any oily part under the car in case you forgot to earlier.
8. Take the car off the jackstands and set it down.
9. Pour the correct amount of oil into the engine. Use the funnel to pour the correct amount of engine oil in the car. Make sure you don't put too much.
10. Screw the oil cap back on.
11. Go inside the car, and start the car. Leave it on for 15-30 seconds (I just leave it on for 30 seconds, but that's just me)
12. Turn the car off, and check the dipstick to see how much oil is in your car. The oil mark should be at the "FULL" mark. Hopefully, you put the right amount of oil. If you put too much, you'll have to drain some out.
Congradulations... You just did your oil change.
By the way, while your oil is draining, you can do some under-car checks. Like checking your steering rack, and stuff like that. Don't waste the time
PLEASE, next time do a search. Google.com, honda-tech search button. Just seach.
Thanks. Nobody else ask how to do an oil change.

Not sure if it's the same on a GSR, but if it is .. do yourself a favor and do the oil change when the engine is nice and cold. Reason being is that the oil filter is underneath the IM so you have to reach all the way up to unscrew it. Oil will leak on your arm .. if it's hot oil ...

the engine should be warm, because if its cold a lot of the oil won't drain out. just be careful not to burn yourself

Not true. I always do my oil change with the engine cold because I don't have to risk getting burned. And second, doing it cold makes the drain plug MUCH easier to remove. I always used roughly 4.5 qts of oil change on my 94gsr, so thus I know doing it warmed won't make a difference interms of the amount of oil coming out.
