Default Intakes: any good? Headers: JDM but what brand?

I dont have much money so when I do a mod I would like it to do as much for me as possible.

First, Intakes. AEM CAI was the one I was looking at but I've heard from some people that on a ITR, it makes only a couple of HP up top and with the usual 3 to 4 hp hump in 3000 to 4000 rpmish, but other people say that the AEM CAI makes great power. I've heard the Comptech filter is a dyno tested 2 hp. I really havent heard about the Comptech Icebox. Those are the three that I am looking at. If the AEM would make good power, that's the one I was going to get but I am not going to waste my money on it unless it gives me 5 to 8 hp. What intake would you guys sugest?

Secondly, I know if I get a header it will be a JDM but should I get Toda or Spoon or save some money by getting the 98+JDM ITR Header or the DC Sports JDM header. Has anyone dynoed their ITR with the DC Sports JDM header on it? Is it better than or worse than the 98+ JDM ITR header?

In the future, I plan on some type of fuel or VTEC control whether it be hondata or a Apex-i Power FC or taking the cheap way out by getting a VAFC from Apex-i. Also, I plan on Toda Cam Gears and AEM Pulleys if this will help in the decision making process. Thanks in advance.

I'd say AEM is a great upgrade. Its was one of my favorite mods on my 98 gsr.
When installed, I felt a power gain all throughout the rpm band width. I felt no lose in power anywhere. great intake.

For header, I would thing that the JDM DC was the best bang for the buck, but i think you would need a new cat also.

try research the JDM DC 4-1 header.

What about Injen intakes? Everybody always says AEM, but nobody ever has anything to say about Injen, are they good/bad?

[QUOTE]I am not going to waste my money on it unless it gives me 5 to 8 hp.QUOTE]

I really don't think an intake will give you 5-8 horses for an ITR. Intakes are a very touchy subject when it comes to the ITR. Some people sware by it and others don't. There was a post a while back that dynoed the AEM vs. Injen and Ice Box. I would provide you w/ a link, but I don't know how. . Basically it showed the ice box making alot of low end power, while the injen intake made the most on top end, and lastly the AEM was the worst intake of them all. I ended up getting the injen CAI. On the butt dyno it seemed like my car pulled a little harder in higher rpms.

As for header, I agree that the DC JDM-1 is the best bang for your buck mod. As for Toda, have'nt heard much about it since it is fairly new, and alot of people suggest the spoon header if you have the money, or I would suggest getting the hytech header if you had the money. I ended up getting the JDM Mugen 4-1 header. Very pleased with this header, pulls alot stronger from 4k on up.

I would go with the Injen cold air intake (i love my injen CAI)....JDM ITR 4-1 or a DC JDM 4-1 they are both good.

Hey S&P500ITR, dont most ITR's dyno at 160ish? Then a 164 with a test pipe really isnt all that is it? I was just wondering. I was thinking an ITR would make around 170 with a JDM header.

So Injen makes a good intake? For some reason, I always thought they made riceboy stuff. What do you think I should do? Get the Injen or just get the Comptech filter? I cant see myself paying over 250 for an intake which is the case if I was to get the Comptech Icebox.

OK, even though There is much listed here and can be found with the SEARCH function,

I will add my .02 since the Intake and Header are the first things I did to my current R.

I chose the Comptech "icebox" and full short-ram for an intake. Why you may ask? Well it was billed the alternative to the AEM/CAI "which I already had on another car and hated the whistle," And that it would produce beating performance to the AEM in different ranges or at least match it. Well, It is a Damn good piece! No it is not the same quality as the OEM box but it does feel better than stock and Hell it's NOT an AEM unit!!! Everybody upon everybody has an AEM... And plus by it's design nature it can't hydrolock.

I also after much investigating, "and don't think I didn't investigate with the Comptech piece," Chose the SPOON 4-2-1 header. this was based partly upon posted feelings about it and that I was interested in a 4-2-1 because I use my R for daily driving and want the gains to not only be in the high-end but a little in the low and some more in the mid. BUT HELL I can't say enough so far, The Spoon 4-2-1 Sings or Screams like a Banshee on Crack while going through the DT's, So in English it F*ckin roars as soon as you hit VTEC! Good all around low to mid feel and little mid gain, But, at the Vtec crossover, Dr. Jekyl turns into a Meaner Mr. Hyde than before by far! Trust me. and I don't get anything from Spoon for free advertising.

Thats my choices so far I've got more plans but am gonna chill for now and do some Auto-X till i get used to my new found top-end!!!

Good luck,

A.

PS soon I WILL post some Dyno plots...

I just bought a Comptech Icebox today from Landspeed. Price was excellent so I couldn't resist. Plus the price difference of $50 from the AEM wasn't too bad. I mean it's only a $50 difference.

I just got the Icebox, and not their shitty tube; I was told by Mark @ Landspeedracing that the intake tube just heated up a lot and was a waste of money.

I will post later and tell you what I think of the performance.

True, but I really wasn't too concerned with my peak whp as my torque is good and my midrange whp is better than what it was stock. I also did that with my stock intake system. I have since added an aem cai, so my peak may be a little higher now. Overall, I am pleased with the results over stock. But hey, if you think it isn't all that good, then what the hell do I know.

Sorry S&P500ITR...I didnt mean to come off that way. Seriously, I feel like when I ask something, you are taking time out to give me some of your knowledge and therefore I have no right to critcise. I didnt mean to seem like I was criticizing you car. Once again I appologize.

I am glad you enjoy the headers, I will probably get them or the 98+JDM ITR headers.
Intake I'm not so sure about.....

What is the going rate on the icebox? I see that comptech sells them for $170, any place cheaper?

Yeah i think thats the price that is advertised by most.

I got my stuff from Mike "TypeRmsm @ IPS racing." he has great customer service. I don't remember the exact price but I feel it is worth it. Especially with the Mugen piece beign around $650. or something like that.

In retrospect I'd just opt for the "icebox" and not the aluminum short-ram. Don't get me wrong I'm NOT displeased, I just think that I don't need that shiny metal in my bay and don't feel that it contributes to any performance. Of course I could be entirely wrong but thats just IMHO...

I think you're right about not going with the intake tubing. I just have the foam drop-in at the moment.

For intake I will just get a Monster Power Filter(inbox) for a TypeR. They works great for me since they're inbox I don't have to worry much about sucking moisture and losing low end torque like those CAI.

For header I will get SPOON 4-2-1 which has a 2.5" collector or a JDM 4-1 if I am tight on budget. SPOON header is the best in "all ranges" kinda header which u won't lose much low end and gain from mid-hi rpm range.

Pls visit http://www.spoon-sports.com and email Jackie at info@aj-racing.com for further info.

Intake: doesn't matter as long as it is a high flowing filter.

Header: If you must go "JDM" then get the Spoon, but you should really look into the hytech or the SMSP models ....... American made and custom for the car.

The cheapest mods in my opinion would be: Modify your stock intake (remove the resonator and make the hole in the airbox bigger), put K&N filter in it. Get the DC JDM 4-1 with 2.5" test-pipe. Remove the first bottleneck in your stock B-pipe. Advance your timing, and maybe remove the P/S belt.

I'd say AEM is a great upgrade. Its was one of my favorite mods on my 98 gsr.

Why, why, why will people comment in an ITR post when they don't own an ITR and don't know what they're talking about?

Why?

The AEM has a proved big increase for the money on the GS-R. It does not have the same effect when used with an ITR, and you won't see anywhere near the gain on an ITR that you see with a GS-R.
George~

I gained 4 whp with my AEM. To me, $200 for 4 whp equals a good investment However, I can't agree with you more on the AEM/GS-R issue. Gains seem to be much greater on it than our beloved R.

The length of the AEM tube is not tuned. That's why it causes a spike at 4000 rpm. I still think the AEM is a little bit too long. A short ram intake (same length as stock tube) is in my opinion the best compromise. You have to take care of the hot air of course.
