good luck finding one .... i was looking for one last week for my car and just gave up on it so i am deciding to rebiuld it instead ...

 

If you're not in a hurry and you have a self service junkyard near by, keep looking there for one that looks new(er). I've seen several trannies in 3rd gens here that you could tell just by looking at them that they were near new/rebuilt. Seen both automatic and manual. I also see some cars that are really really low mileage (60-70k... even a 38k once, but that had to be rolled). If you get a used one though, be sure and check the fluid. If it's real dirty and black I'd pass on it. 3rd gen autos are excellent trannies, BUT being that they have a non servicable filter, if nobody ever changed the fluid and it gets real dirty, the internal filter plugs up and it's all down hill from there. If the fluid was changed regularly and it's nice and clean, then the tranny is most likely still good.

If you want to swap to 5 speed though, it's not that hard as long as you can do the work yourself. This how-to may help you a bit...
