Tail of the Dragon
Any of you driven the Tail of the Dragon -Highway US129 in N.C.? My friend has been talking about driving it for years - me in my R and him in his S2000. Another friend told me that he wanted to go there on his next trip to the US and test his driving skills there. He owns a Corvette and lives in Zurich. Must be a fun drive if they talk about it - and they live more than 500 miles from the area. When is the best time to go; is it crowded? I'd imagine fall would be awesome - but maybe a lot of people?
I saw these videos on Temple of VTEC: http://www.vtec.net/articles/v...27390 - but of course there is only so much you can get from videos.

That's a recipe for a disaster, IMHO. I say just enjoy it.

It is a lot of fun! The speed limit on the NC side is 45 mph
(only 2 miles or so). The posted limit on the entire run used to be 45mph, and honestly 45mph was a blast on this road. The speed limit on the TN side (about 8-9 miles) was recently changed to 35mph, and it IS enforced
. Lots of bike traffic on weekends and more people know about the Dragon due to internet chatter. The least law enforcement harassment, and least bike traffic will be found Monday - Friday. If you insist on weekend runs, get it done before 10:00am. Have fun, keep it in your lane, keep it off the rocks!

and keep it on the pavement, not out in the trees (no gaurd rail)...

Sounds like good recommendations. We're thinking fall time later this year- maybe October. Could you recommend other roads nearby to add to the driving experience? We'll be coming down from the North, from NY through VA. It would be a good excuse to take a couple of days off of work and drive them during the work week when traffic is lighter.
