Default Getting ITR's 45k service - Valve Job, or no?

The dealership is going to charge me $175 for the service, plus $125 if I want to get my valve clearance adjusted. The dude said it wasn't really mandatory after the '99's to play with the valves at service stops unless they're noisy.

I figure I'll get it done just for fun... Unless you guys think it's totally pointless at 45k.

Too often is better than not often enough, IMO.

So I'd do it, but I personally would do it myself.... which may be why I think it is OK to check them more often than the maintenence schedule indicates.

I had a valve adjustment done when my car had 30K miles. I concerned about the warranty issues so I had a dealer do it (Pauly Acura) and the price was actually very reasonable.

It turned out that 2 valves were slightly out of spec. I think it was pretty good as the car had been thru so many hot sessions on track.

This would be why I'm doing a valve adjustment now with 37,000 miles when I got one done five months ago at the expo when I had 27,000..... lots of track time.

Well they only charged me $100 for the valve adjustment, the chick on the phone mis-quoted me. I got a ride back to work by one of their porters in a CL Type S... Which was cool, except he didn't know how to drive stick

A porter that doesn't know how to drive stick?!?!? That would concern me as its them that are the ones pulling the car in and out.

You ever go to Continental Acura? The service there is pretty good. But only charging you $100 is pretty good too. Hows the service at Pauly?

$125 for a valve adjustment is a rip off. Anyone with some mechanical skill can do thier own valve adjustment in 15mins. But if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself then by all means pay to get it done. You will definitely feel a differance after you have the valve adjustment done. I do my valve adjustment every 15k miles.

Well I'm happy with my service. I'm amazed the valve adjustment made such a difference. My car seems to pull smoother, run quieter, and doesn't sound as nasty when slowing down while in gear. The techs at the dealership also strongly reccomended I take the bent T1R off my car... Not sure what I can do about that.

Hey PyR01-0347,

My valves are already to spec, so I'll come over to your house, you can take off my valve cover, put it back on, and we'll split the $500

Excellent.

So is the service at Woodfield.

And, for those who live to the north of us, in the land of milk and honey and , the service at Acura of Brookfield is also outstanding.

I would say Woodfield has a great service dept, at least regarding warranty claims. I have really heard some horror stoies from certain others.

What are the recommended intervals for this service? (Sorry, my owner's manual is out in the car.) From your comment, it sounds like every 15K miles (or 12 months?) for the '97-98, and every 30K miles (or 24 months?) for the '00-01. Is that correct? Or do they specify intervals without regard to time duration?

Silly question, but what are the ramifications if you don't do a valve adjustment?

Okay, I went out to the car (my '01 ITR) to look it up. What the owner's manual says is to adjust the valves at any service if they're noisy, and otherwise, to do it at 105K miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. Uhhh... no thanks. I agree with George. If you hear a lot of valve noise, IMHO you've gone way past the point where they should have been adjusted. For many years, manufacturers have recommended that valves get adjusted every 15K miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, which is the recommendation on my '91 NSX and my wife's '94 GS-R. I wouldn't worry so much about the time interval, since (I think) valve clearances get out of whack during use, not from the time that the car sits around. But I wouldn't push the mileage interval. On my ITR, I'll probably get the valves adjusted at least once every 30K miles, and maybe even as often as the 20K that George recommends.

They charge $125 for a vlave adjustment, and I thought I was overpaying the $75 my dealership charged me.
