Default AEM intake, get water valve or no?

Quick Q, would you say its better to get that water diverter valve thing or not?
my friend has an ITR, and AEM CAI, and the filter got busted, so he needs a new one.

hes thinking about getting that valve that keeps water from getting into the engine, but I remember hearing somewhere that its no good or something.

we dont really have any worries about flooding, or really crazy rain..
so i'm just looking to find out what I should tell him.

thanks.

Yes! Get the bypass valve. There have been numerous people who have hydro locked their engine because they sucked up water through the CAI. Don't be the next on the list. Some people may argue that in order to hydro lock their engine the filter would need to be fully submerged in water but for the price of the bypass valve I would better be safe than sorry.

I personally don't think you need a bypass valve. You should be fine as long as you drive smart and don't go puddle-diving.

If you do the AEM... skip the valve. Just accept the risk if you live in a wet climate.

However, with all that, you're 37% of the way to a Mugen air box - go all the way. It's only another $415 or so.

Why? How does this help him? How does this relate to his question?

Anyway, my 99 SI had an AEM my R has an Injen and have put serious miles on both cars. I also live in raining *** Houston with floods that shut down hospitals....you get the picture. I never had a problem with "CAI" intakes and since your living in norcal I wouldnt waste money on the bypass vavle, just be careful when/if it rains.

point being, sell the current intake and go stock or icebox. then he won't have to worry about it...

Ok,
i'm going to relay on to my friend, that he should NOT go with the bypass valve.

we live in california. when it rains.. it rains.. but it doesnt exactly "pour" and its not very hard to avoid giant puddles.

OH, also, I remember hearing that you take a performance loss if you use the water bypass valve, is this true?

Take it off if your that pissed off about it...get a piece of rubber to replace it and take the thing off...

I personally like AEM intakes. I agree with most reviews about the throttle response, etc....but I like its overall performance.

I wouldnt install the bypass valve either. I have heard more horror stories about installing it than not.

Don't bother with it. I live in one of the rainest places in the continental US and I had the bypass valve. Then its crappy platic design cracked, and how wouldn't it considering all the vibrations it has to endure. I took it off and haven't had any problems. You would have to be an idiot to complete submerge your whole fender in a puddle of water.

Or you could just sell it and keep the stock air box or go with Comptech if it bothers you.

I have had an AEM cai on my last 3 cars without any problems. The filter has to be totally submerged in water to hydro-lock the engine. I have driven in heavy rain many times and even hit vtec in heavy rain with out any problems. The bypass valve will prevent hydro-lock, but will most likely rob any benefit of the cai.

I think this is what many people don't understand (I didn't at first because I've lost and engine do to water and was paranoid, but that was due to flash flooding and on a stock airbox). To create a vacuum the water will have to cover the entire tube. That will mean standing water half way up your bumper, past the seal of your door.

All i'm going to say is this: RETARDS (not you Active Aero, good info)

you have to fully submerge your filter to suck water. Unless you are driving in 5 inches or rain, what's the point? There are many documented cases of the bypass getting sucked up into the intake (you hopefully know where it goes from there). And if you ARE driving in 5" of water, you are not smart and probably won't be saved by some small foam piece in the middle of your intake.

I don't know how many times people go over this, and I don't know if most people actually think before they form opinions or statments, but that bypass valve is useless. And anyone who thinks driving through normal puddles will cause a hydrolock, they aren't thinking straight either.

Think people, Think.

First of all, I have lived in northern cali for 26 years and in all that time, the most it has rained is maybe 2 inches....if you lived in FL, then maybe...but cali come on man.

I wouldn't get a by-pass valve. It's just not the same with it.
