never ridden one so I can't tell on wether it is a good beginners but I will advise to stay off the throttle yamahas have nice power curves
My first bike was a '92 FZR w/ 15000 miles for $2250. They're good bikes, but if you're serious about riding you should buy it with the mindset that you're going to sell it in a few months for something better. Try offering $2200 and see what happens, I'll bet the seller goes down to $2350-$2400.
If it's your first bike, keep in mind that you're going to drop it sometime. Yes, you are. You might want to look for a bike with a pre-cracked fairing so that the previous owner absorbs the price of the damage for you.
Happy hunting!

yeah....I have been through the first time rider pep talk
I figure that it will only be kept for a season or so, just to get used to riding...
is there anything that I might see when I check it out that should be a big "don't buy this pos" sign?
Thanks for all the help

make sure to check the fork seals and that they are not leaking. on my first bike i forgot to even look at these and it turned out that the bike's front suspension was completely shot. there was big-time dipping of the front under braking and the oil from the seals leaked all of the front brakes all the time.
those fzrs are pretty strong. was at the track the other day and someone brought out an old-school one i believe with the two round lights and smoked alot of r6 asses in it. i guess it is the rider that makes the bike and not the other way around.
overall if it is your first bike really doesn't matter too much on condition as long as it will hold up long enough for you to learn. hope that was helpful

Something else to think about,
When you meet the seller, see what kind of guy he is (or gal..) Talk about bikes, talk about whatever, just see if they're friendly. It's really cool if you can become friends with the seller. Ask if they're buying another bike, and if so, would they like to ride with you sometime? If the seller is willing to hang out with you/ride bikes together/give you pointers after the sale, you can be more confident that they're not trying to pass a lemon onto you. That's what happened w/ my first bike/buyer, and we still go riding together even though I've long since sold it

when you look at the bike..look the bike over..see how the physical condition is..and if its in good condition ask the owner how easy it is to pop wheelies, and to discribe how he does it. If he does tell you about it..walk away..walk away fast..that bike's been abused.. or offer him $2,000 and see if he'll go down to $2,200
this is some good advice for any kind of vehicle....
i almost (i said ALMOST) bought a corvette last year, but the previous owner told me about his trips to the dragstrip with it. that pretty much ruled the car out.
...well that and the burnout he did in his driveway.
dumbass.
