Default TIRED OF THE BS

ok me and my buddy got into it today. He has good knowledge when it comes to cars but what he just said today just blew my mind.

we are doing a project, building a go-kart out of my old FZR 600. He tells me that we are going to use smaller rear wheels on it and to make up for the gearing we are going to put a larger rear sprocket on it. I told him that thats going to kill the topend and be the opposite than what we want.

someone please back me up on this. TIA

Exactly....with small wheels you will not need a large rear sprocket. but with too small of a sprocket youll be doin like 150mph

You are right. But, how fast do you want to go in a home made cart?

If you know what the top gear in the transmission is, then multiply that by the redline to find what the max rpm's are on the output shaft. Then measure the circumference of the tires you are going to use. From that you can figure the rpm's at the top speed you want. If the motor can turn 12k and the tires are at 3k at your planned top speed, then the rear sproket needs to have 4 times as many teeth as the front one.

Don't forget to make sure the brakes work too.
