Joerocket or Dainese leather jacket????
Interested in getting a leather jacket. Which leather jacket would hold up better and can both hold up pretty good? Joerocket speedmaster leather jacket or Dainese leather jacket? I've not decided on which Dainese leather jacket, maybe Talos. Any good place to get Dainese at a good price?
I definatly think Dainese is a much better designed and constructed jacket. I looked at all the brands before I bought mine, and I think Spidi and Dainese are the best (Vanson a close third). Kinda expensive, but I'll always spend the extra cash on safety gear to make sure it's going to hold up. Oh by the way I have the Imatra - got it at shop in SF can't really help you on on where to go.
Dainese is the most comfortable imho and thats why I bought a Dainese suit. Been down twice in it and it doesnt look too bad with only 1 small hole the size of a dime on the elbow.
Not all dainese jackets are the same. it would be helpful if you could list a specific model.
Just get get a jacket that fits and uses CE protection. Try to read reviews on the jackets you want, try them on in shops etc

I just got a Dainese Trax from diavoletto.com:
http://www.diavoletto.com/merc...p.jsp
It's a really nice jacket, fits really well too. The closures are velcro, which I like because they are much faster/easier than buttons. It is really comfortable too.
I went to a store and tried on what I wanted and figured it out. I was going to order it from them, but they couldn't get the color I wanted (all black) so I ordered it from itally. It saved me arround $150. Be aware that you will be charged duties (~$30).

I'll sell you my Dainese for $550. I wore it for 5 days before my bike got stolen. It's basically brand new. Was $705 brand new. Price is non-negotiable.

I've got the exact same jacket. Make, model, color, size... I'll let mine go for $300. It's got some light scuffing on the elbows. Nothing approaching a scratch. Just getting too big for the suit. Oh yea, got the matching pants. Btw, JR is crap. The speedmaster line is a higher degree of crap but crap nonetheless. Anyone who has crashed JR as well as dainese/spidi/corner knows. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't
Yeah they do. Not the name itself, but the quality of the jacket, and that can often be infered from the name.
Sorry to say it, but it is generally acknowledged that stuff like 1st gear, teknik, ect is lower quality (less$$), joe rocket is a bit better, alpine stars next, then dainese, spidi, custom suits.
Don't buy a jacket specifically for the name, but if your thinking "that jacket looks nice, but it is so cheap" then it probably isn't going to provide as much protection in a wreck.

Brand name matters a little bit IMO. Look at the armor, stiffness, size and location. If you were to find a jacket that fits like a glove, has armor where it's needed, the armor feels sturdy, colors match your bike, would you steer away from it because it was made by First Gear? Maybe you guys have $$ to throw around.
It's just like buying an exhaust, you have Spoon, Mugen, Fujitsubo, JIC, etc... but if you find a Dynomax that suits your needs for hundreds less...why not?

I guess I don't really know enough about armor construction and placement to be able to tell which jacket will provide good protection and which won't. Obviously leather thickness, liners and padding on armor all add to a safer fall, but I don't know if armor compound A will protect better than compound B. I leave that up to a company I trust. We all have our individual comfort levels, and if someone is ok with a less expensive jacket than kudos to them. I'd rather have the piece of mind that my jacket is of the highest quality, with no expense spared. It makes me feel safer.
A quick run down on different brands:

I buy shitty gear and my fear of wrecking makes me become a better rider.....k/p =P.
Good points...brand names are associated with quality which associates higher price......I have a Joe Rocket jacket BTW.

I agree, but only to an extent. The importance of safety gear seems a lot greater than that of an exhaust.....gear would just not be one of the things I'd skimp on, like brakes, and tires.

There are exceptions but the rule of "you get what you pay for" applies here. Of course the majority of gear is highly overpriced. How joe rocket changes their model lines every year is particularly humorous. Reminds me of car sales gimmicks. Remember a good suit outlasts the actual bikes. I like Dainese b/c they have excellent quality leather, stitching, fit and finish. They crash well and nothing ever looks second rate. All the leather looks like it came from the same cut, the grain is either imperceivable or running parallel always. As a whole, Dainese stuff doesn't have as much ventilation though. Only a few models have venting. Spidi suits are right up there with Dainese. A smidge looser in the fitting and they are actually more comfortable. The stitching on both brands is double or triple and tough as hell. Id expect kevlar thread or something along those lines. In my experience Teknic goatskin gear is thicker than a comparable cowhide piece while offering less abrasion wear. I have never crashed in one so I can't back that up. However, it is interesting that Teknic's higher end products are cowhide and only the entry level gear is goatskin. The stitching on Teknic stuff sucks, it'll start coming out at the cuffs from rubbing against your glove gauntlets after awhile. Joe Rocket leather is generally good. Some of the smaller pieces are from folds. The stitching is ok. I really don't like their sizing (lots of leeway in the "torso"). After wearing a highside suit for a bit I noticed a couple of small examples of half assed construction but nothing major. Course the thing absolutely fell apart when crashed. Everything they make but the Speedmaster 2 piece seems to do that. I've seen some Speedmaster's hold up as well as comparable Dainese/corner/spidi suits. No experience with agv, hjc, fieldsheer or firstgear. Remember just b/c the guys on AMA guys wear sponsor patches from JR or the like, their suits are most likely custom made by a Corner leather affiliate. Oh yea, Alpinestars stuff is great, original and hold up well. Just way too expensive. And yes, more than the Dainese stuff I buy. Love the Alpinestars gloves and boots though. Tough choice between the Sidi vert and the smx+
Makes perfect sense....good write up Tony. You can never skimp out on protecting your body. I only have a joe rocket phoenix for the hot weather....I myself am deciding on a leather riding jacket and with all these brands to choose from, it's damn near impossible. Your post helped a lot though.
My buddy had a lowside just a month ago and he had a dianese jacket which held up very nice.

All my friends including myself have the Joe rocket Phoenix jacket. One of my friends tested out the durabiltiy of it last week wrecking at 75mph. Saved a lot of his arm but he did end up getting scratched up a bit in between where the padding was placed. Stupid design but its really better than nothing.
