Default gas gauge fluctuating a lot!

Hey- '92 civic DX, 200k miles.

I know that gas will slush around and move the gauge a little but when I go on exit ramps it will drop from above 1/2way to all the way below E... why does this problem get worse over time?

Mine does the same. Nothing to worry about, IMO. At first, I was VERY worried and posted an H-T message, also, but I realized the needle would eventually go back to where it's supposed to be and read normally after getting off the on-ramp and cruising on level highway surfaces. And I'm not just saying mine does the same thing as yours; it truly does. Mine also moves around a lot when accelerating away from stoplights and stuff. Kind of annoying, but the gas gauge works fine otherwise.

its a problem with every honda

downhill or left turn = needle goes up

uphill or right turn = needle goes down

I think all Civic gas guages do this, I have the same problem. Especially down under a quarter of a tank!

I wondered the same thing for a long time, but did realize it mostly happened in hard turns.

my needle drops fast when im driving hard, then goes back to normal when cruising. im guessing its b/c im running a huge fuel pump (255lph) and it take time for the the gas to come back after the fpr

Ugh, tell me about it! Above a half tank, hardly moves; below that the thing doesn't stay put. When I was boosted and running a 255lph Walbro, that **** dropped with the quickness. Still got 26 mpg, though.

I have a stock vx and i dont really see the difference or the supposed "50 mpg" that it says? guess sometime soon ill have to fill up and drive withing reason ie no hard accelerating etc... to see if this is actually somewhat true. the gas thing drove me insane when i first got my car so i was filling up all the time and then finding out i could only put like 7-10$ (canadian) i iwas pissed off.. ohw ell sorry for long post im very bored

its the floater that reads the gas needle. actually uses a magnet and a bunch of coils. probly from being slushed around alot it gets all gunked up. it will still register fine just paranoid when ya see the needle bounce. it will fix itself over time usually and if it gets 2 bad maybe the floater went bad.

yeah, i went to pick my mate up from the airport the other day, missed the turning and ended up quite a way from where i was supposed to be so I ragged it all the way back.. anyways on the way i floored it round a roundabout turned off and noticed my petrol gauge was on empty, got a bit worried as it was reading half before i turned off but soon realised it was just a false reading when it shot back up...
