Default News for ARC air box owners!

After extensive search, I have found inexpensive replacement for my ARC air box!

It turns out that the 200mm x 237mm filter used in the ARC air box is from JDM

Mazda FDs!

US FDs use a different filter, HOWEVER, the filter for the MPV is EXACT match!

Same filter is also used on some early 929s and B2600s. That means plenty of

choices for cheap filters: Purolator, Fram, etc. and of course, K&N, pn# 33-2117.

a few years ago, i did the same. i went through the k&n custom catalog, and found a filter that fit with only minor trimming. how thick is the foam (around the sealing edge) compared to the ARC filter? i had to shim mine, as the sealing edge was about half as thick as the ARC filter. i must try the mazda mpv one though. good job.

* i'll find more pics in a bit

Fram & Purolator fits perfectly, but the K&N is a little loose.

It's probably okay, but I may add a 1/8 thick foam strip inside the top cover.

Always wondered about the ARC airbox. The air flow is supposed to be coming from the top of the unit right? I'm not sure how it's beneficial. Is it just supposed to be keeping the filter away from the heat of the engine? I'm not flaming at all, I'm just curious as to how it benefits performance.

The box draws cold air from between the hood and core support. It has a

funnel inside the box to enhance air flow. Its connected to a second chamber

via a 3". Inside the 2nd chamber is another funnel to enchance air flow. And its

stepped down to 2.5" outlet to the throttle body (I believe AEM's recently release

cold air V2 and others just started doing the same step down.) The overall

design seems to smooth out and slow down the air flow, thereby reducing turbulance.

Or simply, improving quality over quantity of air being fed to the motor.

This is an intake design to enchance the midrange performance of the torqueless

B16. One of the side benefit is the box is quiet, almost stock like compare to all

the other intakes (This is using both the box and the chamber. I have not tried

either alone, so may be other owners can elaborate.)

I see, so it sort of sits at an angle, to pull in air, and smooth it out, nice.

Rodney's ARC box (the EK version) has DUAL inlets, i.e., there is a second filter on the bottom side. I think he dynoed around 193hp with his B18C5, so the ARC does OK for power

Throttle response is to die for

Not saying you are wrong or anything, but I remember a thread a while back when someone did a few dyno runs with the ARC and it turned out that the ARC actually lost power! I'll search for the thread, hopefully I can find it....

So there's actually a panel filter on the top and the bottom? I thought it was only on the top. Is this the same design for all models, or only the bigger EK version?

The EG box only has one inlet; the DC2 and EK versions both have 2 inlets, and the EK box is actually quite a bit bigger than the DC2 version.
