Torque converter question...
Hey, was wondering if someone could please explain to me what a torque converter is used for? I was looking it up and Levelten makes a torque converter that can be used with the SS lude. I was wondering, if instead of going FI such as the jacksonracing supercharger, would a torque converter give my lude much more acceleration off the line? I am willing to sacrafice high end power to make my car faster from a dead stop. Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this and if it would work? Thanks! - Matt
P.S. I saw a WRX the other day and I was talking to the guy at a red light and he said he had a torque converter. when the light turned green he didn't even floor it and he had a good 3 or 4 car lengths on me. and we weren't racing, so neither of us were doing any hard accelerating.

tq converters are found in automatic cars in place for the clutch. there fore .. the wrx with its awd turbo... no **** it would put 3-4 cars on you. But what i don't get is, if you guys weren't racing.. and did normal acceleration.. he shouldn't have put that many cars on you. Maybe HE did rev pass the automatic gear change. the ss prelude without hard acceleration normally shifts at 3k...
levelten. If you were planning on going FI.. and putting around 300-400hp.. then you would want to rebuild ur SS. with the tq convert. Some people over at preludeonline.com had a poll on if the tq convert was worth it for daily driver... it was 50/50. For it helping you have more "off the line" acceleration.. Not really.. But you can bang each gear to 8000 rpm without worrying that your tranny will get F'd up. Since the ss lude's tranny is known to be weak. ( i know first hand.. mine went out 82k miles) Next, you indicate that you don't worry about top end, but worry bout acceleration from deadstop.. YOu drive an automatic... i highly doubt you can get any quicker off the line.. even with 2k worth of mods. The fastest all motor ss i've seen was 15.3 This was a few years ago.. but this guy was rich and put a lot of money in it.. Is it worth it ? UP to you...
I forget the year that honda cut off the 5th gen lude(ss) warranty.. I think it was 98+ models. They extended the warranty to 100k So you can just kill your trannsmission now and let honda fix it .. if you have the factory recall on it. I have a 97.. so i got jipped..
