Default AC kills car?

Well, after driving 3 hours back at 1 am my AC stopped working the next day (just blowing cold air)

Now when I turn the AC on the car dies (rpms go down, makes a bad screeching sound)

Any ideas?

Rubens

compressor wheel starting to seize up a bit maybe? causing the belt to then squeak and the rpms to drop as the engine tries harder to spin it?

maybe.....

replace the belt on the compressor and that should get rid of the squeaking, for the power loss, i would think thats just because the ac compressor is on a belt line with other things that make the car run so by turning it on (if the compressor is blown and not wanting to move) it might b whats makin the car die

would that also fix the AC itself not working?

On my '95 GS-R the AC is on it's own belt without any other accessories. You could check the tension & the condition of the belt.

If the REAL problem is the compressor seizing, then a new belt won't fix it. I'm kinda thinking that's what it is, but can't tell for sure without looking at it firsthand.
