Default Cheap 14x6 (vs. 14x7) options

so this weekend, curt storm and keith drove their HC H4 winning crx on nothing but 14x6 miata rims. i asked about why he didnt run 14x7 panasports, and his comment was that a 14x7 wouldnt make the difference in winning. after seeing the times he posted on his crx and knowing he wouldve won the PCRRC last year if it wasnt for some contact, i would agree to this, and it seems that we are all so focused on getting the "optimum" wheels (case in point the numerous 14x7 and 15x7 threads of ppl willing to give their kidney for them) that we forget that racing is not just about the equipment, but mostly the driver.

so, what other 14x6 cheap options are there out there? most stock honda alloys are just 14x5, 5.5.

I Sneer at the very idea. Why, if expensive equipment doesn't make the winning difference, then that only goes to prove that the competition isn't serious!

Scott, whose car has that "winning difference"...he just can't afford to operate it..."ahh, it makes sense to me"...

Now that is just plain perfect. Excellent.

Tyson... Phatty has had plenty of success on 14x6 AR24s. They have been discontinued, but they are light (13ish pounds) and super cheap if you can find a set.

Well, I do try.

Scott, who heard there was a really affordable Kraut mobile out there, but I can't afford to have two race cars that I can't afford to operate..."Is there no way out of this confounded maze?"...

Its funny I should read this thread after just seeing an old beater civic sedan drive by, on chromed out BMW 325i 'bottlecap' wheels. I think these would require drilling out of the center hole like the miata ones. Some of the older VW wheels work also, but you guys probably already know all of this...

I tend to agree Tyson... I'm not noticing too much diff from my old 15x6.5 and the 14x7 Panasports you sold me. The tires are a year old though, and a different brand then I am used to, and it's only a 1/2" diff in width. But it was kind of like, hey, I might as well get what the legal limit will allow, providing I can get a good deal (which you did provide thank you very much )

I'm looking forward to some fresh tires on them next season and maybe even a 225 width tire. Surely you'd not be too successful with a 225 tire on a 6" wheel would you?

i wouldnt bother trying to fit a 225 on a 6" rim. 205 definately works on a 6".

kind of what I figured, hopefully okay on a 7"

I remember how disappointed I was when I first put Azenis on the ITR's 6" wheels. Sure, there's loads of grip through the corner once you've set the car into it, but I noticed when you'd jerk the wheel back and forth like in a spastic slalom type of motion, the car felt like it was on jello. Now, back on the old RE010's that were 195, the car felt nimble and hella-responsive to the touch of the wheel. Which is more what I want daily driving for sure. I'll probably go back to a 195 the next time I get a set of street tires for the R.

I was just about to post that site.

I believe I will be ordering some 13x8's shortly.

The total of all four of these wheels is cheaper than the price of one panasport.

For really good, cheap, raceworthy 14s, look no further than 14x6.5" BBS rims off E30 325is or 318is. Weigh less than 12lbs, very strong and BBS quality. I picked up a nearly mint set for less than $200 (even had all the useless centercaps). The center-bore is 1mm bigger at 57.1mm, so they are not hubcentric but no big deal, just torque them off the ground. 30mm offset gives a little wider stance without rubbing problems, but if you're **** about offset, try to find E30 325IX wheels, those are 38mm offset.

IMO, really tough to beat for about the price of one Panasport...

Curt was running in Conference Production which forces him to run 14 in diameter wheel with a max width of 6". His renter Keith could use a 7" width in ITA but the competition hasn't forced the issue.

Don't read too much into his comment. Curt would be on 7" wide wheels with 225's mounted in a heartbeat if the rules allowed him.

Rick--who thinks cylinder compression makes up for skinny wheels and tires

Re the 14x6.5's: Yup! Work like a charm on my ITA Civic, cheap and relatively light (14 lb?) Plus they add a touch of Bavarian class to a Japanese econobox

Re the ix wheels though - nope, they are 15x7.

Yes, I have gotten 3 sets of these now (one came with the car). I got them at a salvage yard here for 125.00 and a set off ebay for 137.50 per set. I would prefer 14x7s but at 375.00 and up per set (for heavy stuff), it was hard to pass up.

I have been searching ebay for 14x6 or 14x7 wheels, but all I turn up are wire wheels and muscle car wheels. I must be ebay-search-impaired....

Nah, you're dead on there, just a bunch of blingy wire wheels and classic domestic wheels. You really have to know specific appplications like the BMW wheels mentioned above to find the size you're looking for. Also, try dropping the "x6" and "x7" and just search by "4x100" bolt pattern and "14" - that'll get you a few more choices.

I went through the same ordeal looking for wheels last year, and probably will be again soon.

the more I look around, and the more I think I am just going to buy the diamond racing wheels in 14x7. I just need to figure out what backspace I need...

probably the smartest thing I've heard today. Diamonds will probably be my next set now that the Borbet type T 14x7's are no more. Can't beat the price.
