My 88 is the same way as far as the clutch, but 89-91 you need to step on the clutch to turn the car on.

your lights are wired wrong...some one may have thought it woul be cool for the lights to turn on..

and as far as the clutch goes..

In 89 and up cars it was added as a safety feature, so nobody gets there legs jacked up standing in front of the car if its left in gear. Some guys wire their 89+ cars to start this way, on MR2's they do this to keep the thrust bearing in better condtion.

just went through the wiring in my 88 hatch cause i was having problems

couple thing to do to go about fixing them is
1 check all fuses
2 have a shop manual handy (all wiring diagrams are in it and all wires are color coated to know what is what)
3 check all bulb wire harnesses (i think that was a problem with mine cause of corossion)(tailights anyway)
4 another thing to look for is other wires jumping out the circut (like fog lights or sompshing that may have been on it at one time)
another thing is do you know if that is the gauge cluster that came with the car (i know if you hook one up that fits the harness but from a different car funny thing happen to the dash lights)
I cant think of anything other then that
