Cobalt GT Sport pads or rotors ruining Spoon wheels???
Hey guys, I don't want to blame Cobalt, but take a look at this picture and let me know what you guys think happened. Some of the rust came back off, but the Spoon wheels are pretty much ruined. Is it from the rotors rusting or possible from the metallic content in the pads? Any ideas or information on how to get them clean PLEASE let me know.

Most likely the pads. I know some pads have a corrosive chemical make up, maybe you should ask Andie @cobalt??
Do those happen to be your wheels? it honestly looks like the wheels didn't get cleaned to often.
Which could be a large part of the problem as well.

Some people have show kaas...
they think that wheels not caked in brake dust are cool.
RJ - who tried once last year to get the 6-month old PantherPlus dust off his wheels... didnt work and i stopped caring.

Those wheels were cleaned about 3 hours before i took that picture...
it was wet outside though/slightly raining
i checked...the pads do not give off corrosive dust

Fuggin beat me to it...
Hey want to get rid of those wheels for cheap?
BTW my stock wheels had the same happen to them when I mixed Hawk blues, 2 days of rain and some track time. My brother and I experimented with many wheel polishes and cleaners, I forgot which one worked best. Suffice to say it took a good 30 to 40 minutes to clean one spoke. So they Can be cleaned. it's just a PITA and besides, they're just gonna get dirty again anyway.
A. who has several sets of "ruined wheels" but, has never yet streeted the Te37's...

Combine wet and most any brake pads/dust and you will have sticky caked on brake dust. As said, some pads just produce those effects and when you add wet it tends to get worse. I know that the hawk blues are meaner than your pic by far.
One of the things about those wheels that I'd be lazy enough to try would be to clean them and just flat black spray paint them instead of taking the time to really scrub off all the junk.
There are precoat protection sprays from Zymol and such that will keep the dust from sticking.
Good luck.

Doesn't make sense to me that its the pads.
I was running GT-Sports all season long this year for autocrosses and HPDE, and I really didn't wash the wheels till the end of the season, and the wheels look new again. I was able to take a dry paper towel to the wheels and get most of the dust off, and the rest came off just as easy with some mild car soap. The wheels are Rota's for me, but that shouldn't make a difference.

Give Andie a call about it, or email him directly.
What kind of wheel cleaners are you using?

Thanks for the advice George. I'll have to ask my friend what he's been cleaning them with. I don't think anything special. Do you have anything you would recommend for cleaning the brake dust with?
Thanks again for all your help.

Car and wheels are mine, i have tried Black Magic wheel cleaner, and then Greased lightning wheel cleaner because it had a more acidic content, you guys forget, Spoon wheel are finished raw anodized, no clearcoat at all, super flat. Rota's are powercoated so they have a glossy finish to them, = easy to clean. I have heard that high performance brake pads use epoxies to bond metal compounds together, and what happens when those epoxies get heated up and turn to dust, they stick to things, then they cool, and cake. I figured that the metal compounds in the pads are what made them rust so badly after they got wet. But i spent a good 2 hours yesterday trying to get them clean, i believe they can be cleaned, but it will take something very aggressive to chew through the amount of dust that is on there, i wish i had a super recent pic, yesterday i let the wheel cleaner sit for a while and the brake dust cake on the inside of the wheel started to chunk off. Good news for me until they stopped chunking off and now i have a uneven coat of **** on the inside of my wheels.
If anybody has any ideas that would be great. I really like the GT-Sport pads, they feel great, except they are eating my rotors and ruining my wheels.

Peter,
Drop me a line on Tuesday to discuss this. You are mentioning two issues which do not reflect typical GT-Sport performance: (1) "eating my rotors" and (2) "ruining my wheels". Additionally, using the GT-Sport for under one month will not form a caked layer of brake dust on the inside of the wheel, nor will dust allowed to remain on a wheel affect the finish in under one month, so there is evidently something else going on in your case.
I will be out of town from Wednesday until the following Monday, so please do call on Tuesday if you wish to discuss.
Regards,
Andie
