Default possible to overtighten timing belt if u have auto tensioner?

I have a v6 and the bottom cover is on and the adjuster bolt is out. When I turn the pulley to seat my tb, sometime the tb goes loose and sometime it tighten. Why? I thought the auto tensioner alway apply tension to the tb because of the spring. And it makes a click once every rotation of the crankshaft.

LOTS of "auto-tensiones" require REDICULOUS procedures to get them to function properly...

I'd get a hold of an owner's manual to be sure you're not messing something up...

My buddy was doing one on a montero and it was UN-BELIEVABLE the steps he had to go through to get that thing to work properly...
