The car is an 89 DX with a 91 D16A6 swap. Some friends of mine recently bought it, and its not in such great shape. First, its throwing code 5 (MAP sensor) and code 9 (cylinder position sensor). The car smokes out of the tailpipe, but I'm not quite sure what color it is. If I had to guess, I'd say black. It just doesn't smell like oil.
It also has a fuel pressure regulator, with vacuum hoses everywhere. There are two very small canisters (about the size of contact bottles) mounted on the firewall, with vacuum lines connecting to them, and it has an electrical connector on it also. One of the vacuum lines isn't sealing very well, we tried sealing it with teflon tape, but no luck.
The fuel pressure gauge reads about 32 psi with the vaccum line off, when the spec is 35-42 at idle.
And finally, when you first start the car up it has a very rough idle, with smooths out a little after about a minute, and gets fairly normal after two or three minutes. The car also misses if you're holding it at about 2000 rpm.
Thanks for the help guys.

Black exhaust means the car is running extremely rich. MAP sensor could cause that. Vacuum lines that aren't hooked up to where they are supposed to be could also cause the car to run rich. This also causes your rough idle. Just search around for a picture of an Si and where all the vacuum lines go, like suggested earlier.
dude if you have a email address or some way for me to send you pics, of my somewhat stock motor set up in my "91 CRX Si D16 A6 ITA race car I'll send what you need. Hit me up dog.......Never like to see a hurting

I've got the car sitting in my driveway, and even with a service manual diagram of the vacuum lines I can't figure it out. In all the pictures I see, there is one little black canister next to the MAP sensor. On this car, it has two right next to eachother. Whats with that?
Also, the temperature gauge does not work. Where is the sending unit?

I played with the vacuum lines and got rid of the code 5, but black smoke is still pouring from the tailpipe at idle.
Still throwing code 9. The big connector at the distributor has 7 wires.
Any ideas about the temperature sending unit? All the other gauges work.

the pics should be at that address tomorrow morning, let me know if you need some better detail.......if your computer wont let you play with the pic

I dobut it has internal mods to it. I got rid of the code 5 by playing with the vacuum lines, but the code 9 still remains. I plan on retracing the wiring for the dizzy this weekend, and if that doesn't cure the code 9, then I guess I'll just have to try another distributor.
I can't even tell if its blowing black smoke anymore, because since I messed with the vacuum lines, it idles at 2 grand. There are black particles still coming out of the tailpipe, but not smoke.
Thanks for all the help so far guys.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help I received.
Code 5 was fixed by correctly routing the vacuum lines.
The 2000 RPM idle was fixed by adding a vacuum line to the dashpot, both sides of it need vacuum.
Code 9 was fixed by tracing distributor wiring, 2 Cylinder Position Sensor wires were switched at the ECU.
I now have code 43, but thats an O2 sensor 99% of the time.
Thanks again.
