Default Spoon caliper longevity?

Just a question for those in the know about Spoon Calipers:

Do they come with dust/dirt shields or are they full blown competition calipers that need to be rebuilt every season? If so are there rebuild kit availible?

Also for the pads they use, are the some spec'd pad that differs from the TypeR pads? Would replacement pads be readily availible in the States (ie from Porterfield and the likes...)?

Thanks for any info!

not sure about the rebuild kit, but you can put any ITR pad inside the sp00m calipers

also, the http://www.spoonsports.com site has been updated w/ US pricing.

Not sure where that US pricing comes from, especially considering any authorized Spoon dealers go through A&J Racing in Vancouver, BC.

I believe Eric Bauer is the guy who got a hook-up with Spoon way before Spoon became famous in the U.S. soil. I'm sure he gets his stuff straight from Spoon... I don't know how that will effect aj-racing.com. All I know is Eric's prices are quite a bit lower. Interesting to say the least... (I might have to get a set of spoonies at Eric's prices... that's a pretty good price.

they are nice... kit includes calipers,pads,s/s lines, optional rotors.

Yes, the Zeals are nice, and also you ought to consider the Project Mu setup as well. On a side note, those prices are great, but one must consider shipping/customs/duties as well. You can get great deals from Takai Kara..before all of those are added in. As far as it affecting A&J, I can't see how Spoon would let their relationship with A&J be harmed by someones gray marketing activities. Who knows, though.

Dave - you're right... I didn't factor the amount of $ needed for customs and also time need for it to pass the customs. I'm guessing we would save a few bucks... for who knows how long of a wait. BUT, $1350 for the 4-pot calipers are as low as I've seen.... whoa.

AEM brake "kit" is for girls.........all they do is make the hat bigger and move the caliper out for that "bling, bling" look. F that.
Just get some lines/fluid/pads or the meaty 4-pots that Spoon sells. If you get air to the factory setup, you'll have all the braking you need......the 4-pots just give you better control for more acurate modulation, the factory setup will lock skinny **** 205's up all day.

Not that I'm a big fan of the AEM kit, but increasing the dimension of the moment arm will always increase leverage. Putting all of the new radius into the hat doesn't give you the thermal benefits of a larger rotor though.

FWIW,
Mike

Very true, point well taken, but for the clams shelled out for that setup, much more could be had.........brembo,nissin, NSX...........hawk,porterfield, panther.......neuspeed,earls, goodridge..................parachute, anchor, fat chick with rope attached.

I agree. I dont see the advantage of going with a larger rotor, i.e. more rotational mass and then using your stock caliper to try and grab the thing to stop it. Sounds dangerous to me. Also, since the circumference is larger, seems that the stock cals would not be able to grab as much of the rotor, either. BUT, they do look nice with my 19" rims.

ROTFL, I wonder what the "price/performance" ratio is on the fat chick and rope!

Did anyone care to notice that the complete transmission assembly is only $1550.00? I can't believe it. The OEM US ITR ones that I sell retail for $2340.00 and I have sold at LEAST 15 or 20 at $1775.00 plus shipping.

But then again, shipping a transmission from Japan could add a good couple hundred to the total bill.

But it's already got a 4.785 in it. So it's a tough call.

Ah-ite, let's try this again....

Do the Spoon Calipers have dust/dirt shields or not?

From the images I've seen of them, it appears they do not and thus are full blown competition calipers that need to be rebuilt every year.
(Which is odd since there is no rebuild kit part number I've seen for those calipers.)

Can any body confirm this? Maybe...somebody who has had experience with them or has seen them in real life?
