well i was just in your boat, i just bought my 2000 s2k for $20,350, it only had 7800 miles, and seriously looked brand new. i bought it from a private guy, I would urge you to check out private parties, they will tend to be cheaper than retail dealers.
also, you probably should run a carfax on the car, check it over, of course drive it, make sure it the tranny and engine perform fine, you might even wanna do a compression test on the car, check the tire life left, the interior, a/c, etc.

2000 models had a 1-2 gear grind (happens on occasion)...not anything serious. The oil jet bolts failed in some cars causing the engines to seize (40 or so vehicles only so this wasn't as big a problem as I've heard some make it out to be). What you really need to do is look to see what recall fixes have been done to the car (if you can). I believe the oil jet bolts were one of the recalls (most others were fairly minor). I have a 00 model and it is great. This car will last you a long time as long as you treat it right. Just don't do any 8 rpm clutch drops or anything else like that and you should be fine for many many years to come.
Hope that helps...and most of all ENJOY this car...I know you will.

I agree with the private party idea. Just assuming that is an already a negotiated price ($22995), you will end up paying (if 7% sales tax) $1609 in sales tax, plus about a $500 documentation fee. Totalling $25,104. I am sure you can get a 2001 with less miles on it for that price from private party.
Just a thought, hope this helps.

The only benefit of buying from a dealer (and I mean Honda dealer). Would be the honda certified pre-owned vehicle warranty. I picked my S2000 up last December and got a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty from the Honda dealer because it was Certified. Plus I got a 4.9% interest rate for 60 months. I hope I never have to use the warranty, but more so I hope they don't give me any crap about it if I do have to use it.

I think the certification is only 500. You may want to double check with a dealer though. I picked the car up for 24,500. That was last year when prices were a little better than now, but with the 4.9% interest rate it worked out nice. I've got a 45000 bumper to bumper and 100000 powertrain warranty.
Thanks guys, definately stuff for me to digest..... and yeah I'm hoping to knock another 1000 off the price, cause the sales guy told me it'd be going to the auction soon if they don't sell it.......
