Default Has anyone changed the color of there car?

Hey people, my gs-r is currently cyprus green, and i hate it. I wanna change the color to a blue with like metalic flake or something like that, not sure yet.

I was wondering, if you have had your cars color changed, how good did it turn out, i mean, like can you see the old color on the inside of the doors when there closed? like if you were looking from the back side to the front. How does this all around turn out...and how much did you pay, or should i expect to pay.
Thanks

It all depends on who you take it to and the job they do. i would take your car to a shop peeps recommend. look at there work and that is the determining factor.

Cypress green is not that bad at all. Get some gunmetal or bronze rims and it will go great with the car. I have a 97 gsr (cypress green pearl or something like that, I forgot the exact color). In my opinion, if you don't have the money to repaint the whole car (engine bay and interior) then you should stick with the factory color. If you're not going to do a complete job then leave it how it is. In the end you'll be happier because the resale value on color changed cars really drops. That's just my opinion, but do whatever makes you happy.

It's around 1600 bucks to change color completely...which includes door jams, trunk jams..etc. 1200 is cheap for a paint job because it's labor intensive. Those Maaco-like places leave stuff out of their paints such as the flex stuff so that your paint doesn't start to peel or chip off after being dinged or bumped. They also don't colorsand your car or put an clearcoat on it which is what really protects your paint. Some paints are more expensive than others so the price fluctuates wildly. Mine turned out ok not show quality. Make sure they list EVERYTHING that they used when painting your car on the invoice. Have them break down exactly how much paint they use, how much flex additive they use, how many hours it would take. Tell them you really need details and if they don't want to provide that info , then you'll go someone who will. Most important is the invoice! If they just say "Paint car 700 bux" then I guarentee you they'll do a shitty job. Get that estimate/invoice before doing anything, even if it takes awhile for them to write one up, it's worth it. If your car was never in an accident or had body damage, they really can't add anything extra.

I'm not sure where you are getting this $1,600 number. That seems very low to me. I have 2 estimates in front of me for 1,700 to paint the hood, bumper, drivers door, and rear side panel only. From these numbers it seems to me that a full paint job would be closer to 3 grand.

You get what you pay for, bare in mind that most of the money goes to the body work, so if you can do that yourself (wouldn't recommend) you would save some money.

Yeah you get exactly what you pay for man!! I am going to give you some advice. If your looking to repaint your car I would never look to spend less than $3500 dollars on a complete color change and especially if it isn't a stock color. If you repaint your car the same color then it is extremely less like around $1500-2000 dollars for the same color.

I don't know where you got this estimate from about $1500 dollars for a paint job Ill tell you right now its going to look like ****.

I had a friend who tried doing this same thing and his car looks like complete ***. NEVER try prepping it yourself either.

If you think you can save money by prepping it yourself don't even think about it unless you have had the training and have worked at a body shop actually prepping and painting cars. It's all about the prep work.

I have three friends that "know" how to paint cars and i would never take it to them. I have all my body work done at an authorized dealer. I know im getting a quality job and its well worth the money.

So if you don't have the money don't even try to take a cheap route you'll never be happy. Go to an actuall body shop and tell them you want an estimate on your car for a complete color change, with the engine bay, doors, and everything done right and see what they say it will cost I gaurantee you its going to be in the neighborhood of $3500-4000 or more for a complete color change.

Some good info there..thanks guys.

I wasnt really looking for a cheap price, or an easier cheaper way of doing it. I will be doing all of the body work myself tho, or with my dad i mean. My dad was a jet mechanic for 22 years, and he not only machined parts and repaired the engines, but he also did body work on them, everything except painting them basicly.

He recently restored an old MGB and ended up having it painted professionaly. It looked perfect, so im not worried abou tthat aspect. That car was painted cheap, buy a friend of his that owned a auto body shop, so thats why i am asking about prices. Im not sure how good a deal this guy is going to give me, but he said he would put something together for me.

none the less, thanks for the info guys.

it is possible to get the whole car color swapped. however you will have to strip out the interior, engine, windows, etc so its basically a shell. if you do the tear down and rebuild yourself, you will save a lot of cash. if you let a shop do it, make sure they have a certified mechanic that works there that knows what he's doing. since your car is green i really recommend getting the engine bay sprayed. i was able to get away with not getting it sprayed cuz my car was originally black... but a blue car with green engine bay would look kinda funky.
