Default how big can you go in a SOHC?

Ok, i'm going to build my single for boost. I'm goin with a d15 crank and long rods. I'm also goin to sleeve it while doing this. How big of a bore do most ppl got? All I'm seein is 77mm....is that it?

I recommend NOT using the d15 crank. The d15 crank has small main/rod journals. The larger bearings (in the d16) is going to help keep the motor together in a high hp application.

And you can go as high as 79mm or even 80mm, but with a turbo applicaiton its not recommended for strength. The highest golden eagle recommends is 77mm in a boosted application.

If you really want power outa a d-series, use a d16, sleeve it to 77mm, 10:1 pistons, port the head like only monica lewinsky knows how, use a huge turbo and boost it to the moon.

actually, all the fastest SOHCs run the d15 crank

there are two different cranks. one large and one small.

and the reason i'm going to use it is so i can run a long rod and actually rev it and make power, unlike 99% of ppl that build them, i'm doing it RIGHT.

so, 77mm seems to the be the limit? Guess I'll have to find out....i'm thinking about 79mm, 10.5:1, and a larger turbo..maybe a straight t4.

but thanks for the help

I was under the impression that all the d15 cranks had small main/rod journals. Which d15 crank are you going to be using?

A low rod ratio is actually good in turbo application. You could use the extra displacement too.

What were you planning to deck it or use an aftermarket crank?

stock 1.5l crank on the y8 block

and i need a r/s that will allow RPM.

RPM is whats holding most SOHC's back.

To add, 78mm is the highest Endyn recommends. That is what mine is. Sleeved by Golden Eagle

that's not true at all

the factory valves are so light...all you need to replace is the retainers and you're fine.

and it'll rev to maybe 9 or so

I have heard that too. I went ahead and put Ferrea stuff in though.

i'm going to use Zex retainers...since that's what my engine builder reccomended. They had a fast SOHC too....12.0 with a 15g.

but, i think i'll just use his valve springs too...since he's got some good ones for CHEAP

a friend of mine has a zex powered d16t full zex cam, zex springs, zex retainers. and he revs to 9k, needless to say that he has gone through 3 heads with 2 engines. i wouldn't reccomend going to 9k on a d series, but maybe.

Cam profiles can also dictate how well the spring can keep up.

And RZL can back GSRswapandslow's line of **** if he can come up with the money. Time to get two jobs, Rob, and dance fatboy dance. You still owe me $65, stunna!!

Yes..I spun one of my NA D16Zs as high as 8800 rpms with nothing more that a gude gorilla cam....but...it didnt run any quicker than shifting it at 7500rpm and was only slightly quicker than a stock D16Z cam, like .01 improvement in ET but it was cool reving it that high

BTW..what's holding back Ds is its Head Flow.

Your best bet might be to go with a D16A6 head,I never saw a D make more power than james wests 511whp D16A6 and also the quickest NA D was running a D16A6 Head...Bisi..that's just something to think about

Anyway..what is your goal with this motor? to be the 1st to break 9s or something?

for 11s all you need is a nice fresh stock D16A,Y or Z head..oversize valves and porting would be a waste..just ask BoostedED9 or Zex Man
