Help: Throwout bearing or Tranny?
Hello, I have an 94 Integra LS w/ S80 5-Spd Tranny that I bought at an Auto Auction. This issue has happened since I got it, and I have no prior information on the car except that a girl owned it
.
When the clutch is let out, it has a rough bearing sound at idle and during acceleration (pretty loud). With the clutch in, the sound goes away. But, the transmission shifts completely fine.
To me, and my buddies, we deduced this to mean that it's the transmission that's bad. So I bought a new Tranny for $800 online. We installed it, the problem noise went away.
But, here's the problem. When uninstalling the tranny, I noticed that one of the 'tangs' on the Throwout Bearing, where it mounts to the shift fork, was completely broken off. This effectively had the Throwout Bearing cocked at an angle and loosely mounted. I now realize this could be the source of the noise that made me replace my tranny anyway.
The question. Does anybody know how to verify if a tranny is 'good' before installing it?
I would like to know if my reject tranny is good so I can sell it or upgrade it while it's off the car. It's not worth my time to reinstall it to find out right now.
Hope you guys can help. And yes, I've searched for answers in the forums. Thanx

old tranny probably has a bad input shaft bearing. Throwout bearing noise would come from whenever you're pressing down on the clutch pedal.
You can sell the old one but the tranny still has to be taken apart to replace the input shaft bearing.
