Default Mixing paints = BAD, VERY BAD!

So....I finished the body work on the door that needed repairing after the last NorCal WCHC race. Derek had to do avoidence manuevers off track & there was some body damage. While the body work wasn't pristine, it turned out fairly good for a ghetto race car. I found a brand of paint that semi-matches the other paint. I put on three coats of spray paint. I wet sanded. I also wanted to put on a top coat of clear. Here is where it gets bad...for me at least. I had to buy a different brand of clear. They are not, repeat not compatible. I now have orange peel in various areas of the repaired area.

@ this point, I guess I need to wait for it to dry & then sand the hell out of it & start again.

Ain't low budget racing grand!

added in edit: Screw it. I sanded....a little. I painted. Just don't look @ it when you are closer than 5' away.

it might not have been compatibility - i had the same experience when spray painting & clearcoating, and it was because the paint wasn't completely dry. in certain spots, almost as soon as the clear coat hit it 'peeled', others took a few seconds longer.

did you use the 'oem color match' stuff from dupli-color, or just a close match? i think they make all the si colors.

The shell was painted yellow when I bought it. The (color) paint had two days of 90*+ heat to dry. I have used the dupli-color paints on other projects with good results. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything close to a match in their in store book.
