can a 96 alt. be used on a 90 crx?

I'm running a 95 alternator on my 90 so I don't see why not, I didn't have to rewire the plug, just bolted on and drove away.

yes. I did exactly that. I rewired the plug. Just follow the wiring diagram in the manual. Match function for function. I think 1/2 of the colors even match up.
