You can remove it. It's a pretty common fix for annoying rattles.

As the other guys said "you can remove it". But depending on where you live you may notice a lot of heat coming from the shifter area. Civic for the mid to late 90s didn't have them from the factory (maybe other years too). My wife's 97 Civic is much warmer around the console than mine. You may not even notice it.

Another possibility to your problem is to take it off and cover the back of it with some hi heat rated tape or adhesive. (like the Spoon heat tape for about $25 made for the bottom of the oil pan) Even if you aren't concerned with heat this will give you a barrier between the floor board and heat shield. No metal touching metal equals no rattle. Just a suggestion.

I had some rattling before but it wasn't hitting the heatsheild, it was just the piping being too long and shaking, so I just clamped it down and it went away.

Drive with gloves, I do. My girl got them for me at the dollar store. They are awsome. Fake suede owns! Even in the summer here.!

Thats a pretty hot place for that line to run and it must move around when you shift.

when does your rattling occur? if its between 3k-4k rpm, then it's your header, not your heatshield.

yes, i solved that problem for someone in a different thread...that is when the rattle occured. I had that fixed already tho, and i was still getting a rattle at that rpm range, just sounded different.

The heatsheild in the above pics once removed solved the problem for the most part....i can keep it at any rpm in any gear with absolutly no rattling, except a tiny lil rattle in first gear at the 3500-4200 range, and that i already know is a heat sheild just past the one i removed.

did you replace it with an OEM header or an aftermarket one?
