'92 Legend hard shifting transmission, timing belt
'92 Acura Legend LS 4 door.
Transmission shifts hard. People say this is normal.
Type of fluid make a difference? Honda better than other brand?
Is there a filter that needs replacing? Need to change every 30,000?
One guy with an '89 Legend claims that Lucas Transmission Fix eliminated 80% of the hard shifting. Would this stuff hurt the tranny? Do you think it would help?
This car has 155,695 miles. Timing Belt changed at 81,293 in 1998. Can I go 90,000 before the next one?
Had the front brake pads changed at 2/32". What is the thickness of the new ones? Could I have waited until the noise started?
Thanks

IMO, stay with Honda ATF, works best. Check the rear tranny mount, they are notorious for deteriorating on your model legend. Gives rough shifts, rough idle, and clunk from P-R or P-D or R-D.
"Guessing" how long a t-belt will last is dangerous. Some can last longer due to maintenance and luck. If you have coolant or oil leaking on a belt it will snap quicker. A broken belt means a couple grand on your Visa!!!
Your pads are 11mm thick when new, and you replaced at approx 2mm. The squealer will make noise at 1.5-2mm, so they were due.

If the dealer replaces the timing belt, they'll replace the water pump, etc. Over $600.
Can I have my mechanic replace the timing belt without replacing the water pump?
What does the water pump have to do with the timing belt?
Thanks

The water pump is driven by the t-belt. To replace it you must remove the t-belt.
Don't be a cheapo here, if the pump seizes, you risk major engine damage. It is cheap insurance to do it now and have peace of mind.

Yea, the replacing of the water pump is because well, since you already have it off, might as well and save trouble later.
The shifting hard, I know the 1st gen Legends are notorious for it. My friends 88 Legend had the hardest 1-2 shift ever. I thought there was something wrong with the damn thing until I did some research and found out it was normal. I can't remember if the 92 is the Gen 1...

92 is 2nd gen, and no they aren't supposed to shift "hard" they do however have a sportier shift. My legend has 200k+ and it shifts harder than it used to, however I haven't checked the tranny mounts. change the tranny fluid and see if that helps. btw there is no filter...
you probaly have a good 30,000-40,000 left on the timing belt. If you look at the timing belt cover you can see a cap that if removed will show u what your belt looks like. If there are cracks or the belt is loose I suggest to replace it ASAP along with your water pump. I spent $150 to do it myself (not with honda parts though) takes roughly 15 hours (i am a novice
