my prelude sucks i need a vtec for it
i bought a 96 prelude S 5 speed for $3500 - thats why i didnt care it wasent a vtec . but i want to put a h22 in it. i found them for $1200-2000 w/ECU ... me and a friend who has swaped some engine before are gona attemped it with a haynes (or some kind)of manual and some booze maybenot. im trying to figure out why the manuals ive found seem to end at 95, like there for 89-95 preludes or some wierd sht and i guess the library had one for 96-00 preludes, wich i thought was wierd cause 96 is the same body as all 92-95 preludes.
i just want to know if theres a certain h22 that fits right into my 96 prelude S with 2.2 non-vtec AND if my trannsmission will be ok with the vtec and if the ECU's will need any re-wiring. and i guess the newest preludes (97-00 style) have a 220hp h22 and the one in 92-95/96? were about 200hp basicly i dont know S H I T help

Buy the entire setup....Gauge Cluster, Lines, Engine (long Block), ECU, Wire Harness, pretty much an entire front clip.
You will need alot of things you wouldnt think of or would never think of if you were to try it yourself....yeah you can save some money, but it sounds like your not to mechanically enclined...just like I cant spell...so save yourself the worries, buy a front clip and have a garage take care of it for you so it can be done right.
Catz
If not go cheap and buy a H23 and go boost!

96 started obd2, best bet for performance is to get 93-95 h22 and obd2-1 conversion.
easiest install is 96 h22
yes the f22 tranny will work, but the gears suck, it will slow the **** out of you.

Don't use the f22 tranny, my friend did the same swap that you are talking about and the tranny hold him back sooo much. I beat him with my H23 4th gen and my 5th gen.
you can PUT a F series TRANNY on a H22 ? nah i dont think so...dont quote me tho...i guess i am wrong ....damn i never knew that ..thats crazy

Yep, you can. Most all tranny parts are F and H series.

so does anyone know what manuals they make/where to get for the 96 prelude? like a haynes or chilton or somthing - most auto parts stores i went to didnt even have a empty spot for one..
I suggest that you spend some extra money and get yourself the Helms Manual. It has alot more info then the others besides the other manuals don't explain things very clear and not so much of helpful diagrams. The helms is a good resource. Try http://www.helminc.com
As for the prelude and hp ratings. 97-98 Both SH & Base (Manual has 195hp) Automatic base has 190hp. 99-01 SH & Base (Manual have 200hp) Automatic base has 195hp. The extra 5 ponies were thought to come from the header, but that isn't true, people think its Honda's advertising strategy.
For those who want to know which Prelude has the 220PS(not hp) which is about 217hp. The JDM Prelude Type S (ATTS equiped) or the SIR S-SPEC(LSD equiped.)
Hope that helps and answers some questions.

This is correct.
I can prove the F series trannys bolt on, I've done it to a Freinds 96 Prelude S, we put the JDM H22 in with his stock pos f22 tranny. Falls outa VTEC durings shifts, sux bad.
