SCCA Comp school... anyone done it?
i asked about it in the thread about how many hpde's HC drivers did before racing, but i figured i could get more responses by starting a new thread.

yeah, have your car ready, pay your money, stay clear of accidents and be alert and have fun.
i personally think its better than NASA HPDE route.

they like to throw lots of flags to see if you're paying attention
edit: only took one school and was waived of my second based on previous racing and the chief steward giving his approval
Question- I did a race that same weekend which counted as one of my req'd races to get my Comp License. If I don't make it to another SCCA race this year, and my Novice Permit expires Feb of 04, does that mean I'll have to do anything over again?

I learned a shitload in my SCCA comp school and I went in with a year of race experience. My primary instructor was a Pro guy and I also got feedback from a few others which was invaluable (One that had been literally racing before I was born. When he was talking I was listening).
We got lots of seat time (6ish hours) and a bunch of practice starts (which IMO is the hairiest part of any race and something I did not get exposed to in getting my NASA license).
There were some negatives, but those are seemingly everywhere.
All in all I'd have to recommend it.
And you don't get a regional license from the school. You get a rookie permit. You then have to successfully (ie: dont hit anything) complete 2 races to get signed off for your regional.

I prefer the SCCA comp school over the NASA comp school. You need to have a clue before you go out there though, hence the need for HPDE.
My SCCA school was great. I took it up at the Glen. GOBS of seat time in a race environment.
The NASA school can be very good if you happen to get a good partner and lots of clear track. Otherwise, you'll be going around the track at less than race pace, and hence not very useful drills.

i enjoyed teh school, learned a ton! Only down side was a double school doesnt let you go home for very long and think about how to do things better... It should be 1 every weekend for 2 week...
