Kangaroo mistaken for giant beaver
http://www.thecouriermail.news....html
From correspondents in Vienna
20aug03

AUSTRIAN police who took panicked calls about a giant beaver behaving strangely in a town centre turned up to find an escaped kangaroo.

Police at Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria, eventually managed to catch the animal after it hopped into a multi-storey car park in the centre of town.

"We managed to catch the animal with the help of the local fire brigade and we also called the local vet.

But at the moment we are trying to find the owner of the kangaroo as we believe it is somebody's pet," a police spokesman said.

The marsupial was taken to an animal shelter and will stay there until its owner is found.

Only a few months ago a kangaroo was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Upper Austria after escaping from a wildlife park at Steyr.

Many Austrians like to sport a T-shirt saying "There are no kangaroos in Austria" when they travel abroad as so many non-Austrians confuse them with Australians.

Funny story.... it's amazing how the mind works, that people can see the word 'Kangaroo' and then totally misread 'Austria' as being 'Australia'!!

I'm sure the broad Austrian accent (I should know, my dad was originally from Vienna, Austria) and the fact that they don't say "G'day mate" etc.... would be a dead give away!
